National Opportunities



National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

Career development fellowships

These are available for public health and health service delivery research. Funding worth up to $97,769 or $108,142 per annum is available, which covers salary, salary on-costs, maintenance and travel.

Clinical career development awards

These are intended to further develop Australian health and medical researchers early in their careers. Funding of up to $108,142 per annum is available.

Industry career development awards

Funding is available to support outstanding medical and health researchers early in their career for a duration of four years.  Funding is worth up to $99,431 for the first year of the level one awards and up to $109,980 for the first year of level two awards.

Partnership career development fellowships

These awards are offered through funding partnerships agreed between the NHMRC and each partner organisation. Funding of up to $99,431 or $109,980 per annum is available.

Innovative research grants

Cerebral Palsy Foundation

These support research into the prevention and cure of cerebral palsy. Grants are worth up to $250,000.

Postdoctoral training fellowship

Cerebral Palsy Foundation

These support training in basic research either in Australia or overseas, to enable fellows to work on research projects with nominated advisers. Awards are offered to researchers of outstanding ability who wish to make research a significant component of their career. The fellowship is worth $161,800 for two years.

Grants for asthma research

Asthma Australia

These grants are available to scholars wishing to research related to asthma in any discipline. Grants are worth approximately $75,000 to $150,000 per annum over one to two years. All EoIs should be submitted via the research office.

Paediatric endocrinology research grants

Pfizer Australia

These support clinical research in the field of paediatric endocrinology and associated areas. The total budget for this programme is $150,000 per annum and grants, worth up to $55,000, are awarded for one year.

Research project grants

Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation

Funding is awarded to universities, research institutes, health services and other organisations in South Australia and the Northern Territory for research projects into conditions that may affect the health, education and welfare of children. Project grants are each worth $75,000 for a maximum period of two years. Early career grants are each worth a maximum of $35,000. Each year the foundation disburses approximately $1 million.

Australian Orthopaedic Association

Research projects may cover a broad range of clinical and laboratory investigations relevant to the field of orthopaedics. Funds will be allocated for part-time salaries, as well as for consumable items and inexpensive items of equipment.

Academic Exchange Fellowships

Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund
The University of Sydney and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have in place an agreement to encourage mutual visits by academic staff. Visits by post-doctoral fellows and academic staff of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to the University of Sydney will be considered for support from the Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund. Applications for support are invited from all disciplines and will be ranked on academic merit. Preference will be given to projects in the area of Semitic Studies..

Cooperation in higher education and training between the EU and Australia and the EU and the Republic of Korea

Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency

Two types of action will be funded: joint mobility projects, which will enable consortia of higher education and training institutions to carry out joint study and training programmes; joint degree projects, which will support the development and implementation of dual or joint degree programmes. The budget for this call is approximately €2.3 million.

Research grants

Jérôme Lejeune Foundation - Fondation Jérôme Lejeune

These support fundamental or clinical research projects on the discovery of treatments for genetic intelligence diseases, in particular trisomy 21, but also including: fragile X syndrome, cri du chat syndrome, rare chromosomal abnormalities, Rett, Williams Beuren, Willi Prader and Angelman syndromes. The Foundation also provides support for the organisation of congresses or courses. Funding is worth between €20,000 and €40,000 over two years, but can be higher for therapeutic projects, to which preference is given.

Imrich Sarkany non-European memorial scholarship

Eureka

Innovation research incentives scheme vici awards

Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research - NWO

These grants are for excellent senior researchers who have shown that they have the ability to successfully develop their own innovative lines of research and to act as coaches for young researchers. The annual budget for veni, vidi and vici awards is €150 million. An applicant for a vici grant may be funded with up to €1.5m over a period of five years. Henry G Schermers fellowship

Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS)

This fellowship enables internationally renowned experts in a field that is relevant in the context of the Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law research programme to spend a period of time at NIAS to work on a publication. Dutch fellows are provided with a replacement subsidy and non-Dutch Fellows are provided with a stipend. Lodging for the unaccompanied fellow or the fellow and his family can also be provided at NIAS. Fellows are selected from prominent Dutch and foreign researchers and senior scholars in law and/or the social sciences. The fellowships are awarded for a full research year, or for one semester. Dutch fellows are provided with a replacement subsidy and non-Dutch fellows are provided with a stipend. Openlab summer students

Cern (European Organization for Nuclear Research)

This allows students from member and non-member states to spend eight weeks from June to September 2012 at Cern.  Students will attend lectures and will be able to visit the accelerators and other experimental areas and laboratories that are part of the programme. The stipend for a two-month internship is CHF5,000 for travel, accommodation and living costs.
