Early Career Research Showcase: submit your abstract

Abstracts are now being accepted for this year’s Early Career Research Showcase. 

The Showcase, in its fourth year, is a fun afternoon of short talks aimed at a general audience, by early career research fellows from across the University. This is your chance to find out about the breadth of research being done in the University, and to meet and talk to other researchers.

1  Funding Body: The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA)

Title: Academic Advising Research Support Grant 

Description: NACADA research support is intended to facilitate research related to academic advising. Quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methodologies are welcome, as is research from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Successful proposals will clearly describe the development, implementation, analysis, and reporting of rigorous inquiry that investigates academic advising’s impact, context, or theoretical basis. 
Within these areas, the Research Committee has identified a research agenda of critical areas for research. Potential researchers should note this agenda. Researchers may also be interested in a list of research topics previously awarded NACADA grants as well as a sample grant evaluation checklist used by previous selection committees. These may be found on the NACADA Web site.

Eligibility: Practicing professionals (administrators and faculty) as well as graduate students seeking support for dissertation research are eligible.

Title: Faculty Research Program (FRP)

Description: The FRP is designed to assist individual academics in higher education institutions to undertake short term research in and about Canada. The purpose is to increase knowledge and understanding of Canada through publication abroad of pertinent articles in the scholarly press. Priority may be given to projects that relate to contemporary situations and issues which illuminate options for future developments, or which focus on Canada's bilateral relations with the participating countries.

RESEARCH GRANTS

6 Funding Body: The Roche Organ Transplantation Research Foundation (ROTRF) 

Title: Grant Application & Awards

Description: ROTRF supports clinically oriented research projects, such as observational clinical studies or studies that use human transplant samples for laboratory examinations, and focusing on understanding the pathogenesis and prevention of human transplantation diseases, including organ injury and rejection, viral infection, and late graft deterioration. Furthermore, the ROTRF may consider funding research that addresses related clinical issues in non-transplant patients, including hepatitis C infection and other viral infections, and inflammatory processes relevant to human organ transplantation.

Eligibility: Established faculty members of academic staff at universities, transplant and diabetes centres, and research institutes are eligible.

Amount awarded: Up to a maximum of 300,000 Swiss Francs over 3 years.

Description:  Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) supports hundreds of early-stage research projects – including many ideas that have never before been tested – and scientists from a wide range of disciplines and regions. The Explorations initiative funds innovative ideas that could lead to new vaccines, diagnostics, drugs, and other technologies targeting diseases that claim millions of lives every year.

Eligibility: The grant program is open to anyone from any discipline, from student to tenured professor, and from any organization – colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies.

Amount awarded: Initial grants will be US $100,000 each, and projects showing promise will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of up to US $1 million.

10 Funding Body: Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF)

Title: AISRF S&T Fund Round 6

Description: The Australia-India Strategic Research Fund assists Australian researchers from both the public and private sectors to participate in leading edge scientific research projects and workshops with Indian scientists and supports the development of strategic alliances between Australian and Indian researchers. The AISRF is Australia’s largest fund dedicated to bilateral research with any country and one of India’s largest sources of support for international science.  The emphasis of the fund is on providing support for collaborative research projects and workshops so eligible Australian applicants must have an eligible Indian partner to apply. Funding is provided to support a number of activities including visits to India by Australian researchers, salaries for research assistants and PhD students and workshop costs.

Amount awarded: The maximum amount of funding that can be awarded to a successful project by the Australian Government has been capped at $300,000 (GST exclusive). This maximum amount must be taken into account when drafting the project plan and budget.  A higher cap of $400,000 (GST exclusive) has been introduced for projects that can demonstrate at least one active 'end user' partner.
