Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) - 2011 Awards

Nominations for the annual HAL Awards, which recognise outstanding
contributions to the horticultural industry, will close on Friday 23
September. Those who would like to nominate a deserving colleague are
asked to submit their application as soon as possible so as not to miss
the deadline. The Graham Gregory award, which includes a $10,000 cash
prize and commemorative bronze medal, is presented to the candidate that
has demonstrated excellence in horticulture from any point along the
supply chain, including research and development, education, training,
technology transfer, and advertising and promotion. The Young Leader
award recognises leadership in any discipline of the horticulture
industry by those 35 years of age and under. Both winners will have the
opportunity to travel to Sydney for the award ceremony, which will be
held the evening of the HAL November Industry Forum on Wednesday 23
November, 2011.

$70,000 THE AUSTRALIAN INNOVATION CHALLENGE AWARDS

Entries for the $70,000 The Australian Innovation Challenge awards -
aimed at finding Australia's next big inventions in fields ranging from
clean energy technology through agriculture to astronomy - close on
Wednesday, September 28.  Run by The Australian in association with
Shell and supported by the Commonwealth Department of Innovation,
Industry, Science and Research, the awards will help drive some of the
nation's best ideas to commercialisation or execution. Details of the

Description:  The National Psoriasis Foundation is seeking grant
applications that encourage the advancement of innovative research in
psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Discovery Research Grants are
intended to allow researchers to undertake preliminary and proof of
concept studies with the goal of developing competitive grant proposals
that lead to long-term funding from the National Institutes of Health or
other federal agencies.

Funding Body: Australian National Preventive Health Agency

Title: Preventive Health Research Grants Program

Description: The Australian National Preventive Health Agency (ANPHA),
in collaboration with the National Health and Medical Research Council
(NHMRC) invites preventive health researchers and policy makers to apply
for funding for research projects commencing in 2012.  The Preventive
Health Research Project Grants Program has been established to fund
research projects and the dissemination of research results in order to
facilitate and support evidence-based policy and program decisions
particularly for tobacco smoking, alcohol misuse and obesity prevention.

Amount awarded:  Up to $5.77 million is available in the first round of
grant funding.  Within this budget there is no specified limit to
funding for each application.  Applicants may apply for funding of up to
3 years duration.

Funding Body:  Centenary Institute 

Title:  Lawrence Creative Prize 

Description:  The Centenary Institute Lawrence Creative Prize is a
$25,000 award for outstanding creativity in biomedical research by young
scientists. The winner gets to spend half on themselves and half on
their research. Applications close Monday 19 September.  It's a national
award open to anyone working in basic medical research in Australia up
to eight years after their PhD or equivalent.  The award is named in
honour of Neil Lawrence who was inaugural chair of the Centenary
Institute Medical Research Foundation.  The Prize will be awarded in
Sydney on Wednesday 19 October, 2011.

Applications close at 5pm AEST, Monday 19 September, 2011.

Title: Prize for Discovery in Medical Research 

Description:  SIR ZELMAN COWEN UNIVERSITIES FUND PRIZE FOR MEDICAL
RESEARCH - Call for Nominations for the 2012 Award
The Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund is a private charitable trust
which has supported medical research at the University of Sydney and at
the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for over 30 years. 
In 2004, the Trustees of the Fund established the Sir Zelman Cowen
Universities Fund Prize for Discovery in Medical Research . Nominations
are now sought for the 2012 award of the Prize.
The prize will comprise an award of $10,000 and a medal and will be for
medical research at the University of Sydney by a researcher under 45
years of age at close of applications. Nominees should have made a major
contribution to the understanding or treatment of disease. 
Nominations should be made according to the Prize Guidelines and pro
forma available from the Fund's Office. 
Completed applications should be sent by email to the submission address
below by the closing date.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) 

Title: Travel Grants

Description:

JDRF offers travel grants to early-stage researchers throughout
Australia in order to strengthen the knowledge of type 1 diabetes
amongst the research community. Grants may be used for domestic or
international travel to research institutions or scientific meetings,
for the purpose of furthering the researcher's expertise in the study of
type 1 diabetes.

The visit planned by the applicant must be relevant to type 1 Diabetes
and focus on one of JDRF's therapeutic areas:

*	Beta Cell Therapies; 
*	Immune Therapies; 
*	Complications Therapies; or 
*	Glucose Control. 

Eligibility:

*	Medical or science graduates who are undertaking type 1 diabetes
research 
*	Researchers in the early stage of their career (eg PhD students
or not more than 5 years post-doctoral) 

OR

*	Allied health or nursing professionals undertaking work or
research impacting on the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and their
carers and families; or 
*	Allied health or nursing students, enrolled in a post graduate
program, whose work/research will impact on the lives of people with
type 1 diabetes and their carers and families 

Amount awarded: Up to $2,000 for domestic travel or $4,000 for
international travel

Title: AINSE Research Awards 2012

Description: AINSE Ltd awards provide funding to support projects
undertaken by researchers from member institutions which have an
identifiable focus on nuclear materials and nuclear techniques of
analysis and/or on the use of the unique national facilities and
expertise at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation
(ANSTO).
The Awards: 

*	cover the costs associated with the use of the AINSE listed
facilities 
*	contribute to the cost of travel and/or accommodation when the
university researcher lives in a city different from that in which the
facility is located 
*	contribute toward the cost of equipment and/or materials 

Amount awarded: Average size of awards; $10,000 to $30,000.
