NHMRC Project Grant Progress Reports Due Soon
The progress reports for all NHMRC Project Grants current in 2011 are
due to the NHMRC shortly.
Please forward your report to Sylvia Mendelssohn no later than Friday 18
March 2011. Reports can be submitted as hard copies to: Level 6, Jane
Foss Russell Building or by email to: sylvia.mendelssohn at sydney.edu.au
.
Please note reports must be signed by the Chief Investigator A (or Lead
Applicant A) (on behalf of all investigators), the Head of Department
and the Institution's Responsible Officer (Section D).
The signature for Section D will be arranged in our office. Please
submit your report as soon as possible to ensure all reports can be
signed and submitted to the NHMRC on time.

Early Career Researchers - Biomedical.
Designed for Biomedical Researchers who are 1 - 10 years postdoctoral.
This program has been extremely popular in previous years and provides
an excellent opportunity to get support in career planning, networking
and the development of research capacities.

Mid Career Researchers
Future Research Leaders Program - Module 4 - Intellectual Property and
Commercialisation. This module (part of a program developed by the Go8
Universities) was designed to provide researchers with information on
Intellectual property and an introduction to commercialisation.
The module involves a half-day, interactive workshop that will be
presented by key staff from Sydnovate and will include a panel of
researchers who have experience in commercialisation.

Public Sector Linkages Program (PSLP)
Description:
This round is open for applications in respect of APEC, ASEAN, East
Timor, India, Indonesia, Latin America, Philippines, South Asia and
Vietnam
PSLP offers departments and agencies of Australian federal, state and
territory governments, as well as Australian public universities, the
opportunity to compete for grant funding that will:
* transfer capacity building skills and expertise to their
public sector counterpart institutions in partner countries
* support strengthening of sustainable development-focused
public sector bilateral and regional linkages.
Activities must:
* have a primary developmental focus
* comply with AusAID development policy guidelines on gender and
development, poverty reduction, environment and sustainability
* clearly identify sustainable benefits to the partner country
* be planned and implemented jointly with the counterpart
organisations concerned.
Amount awarded:
Grants generally average $250,000 for an activity.

Description:
Australia-China Council grants are intended to provide seed funds for
innovative proposals relevant to the mission and goals of the Council.
This includes proposals which demonstrate the potential for the
development of long-term links between individuals and institutions in
Australia and counterparts throughout China, Hong Kong, Macau and
Taiwan.

Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund Academic Exchange Fellowships
Description:
The University of Sydney and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have in
place an agreement to encourage mutual visits by academic staff. Visits
by post-doctoral fellows and academic staff of the University of Sydney
to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem will be considered for support
from the Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund.
Applications for support are invited from all disciplines and will be
ranked on academic merit. Preference will be given to projects in the
area of Semitic Studies. It is expected that the visits will have a
specific academic purpose and that their duration will not exceed 2
semesters. Shorter visits are encouraged. When an application is
approved, the level of support will normally include a return economy
airfare and some contribution to living expenses.
These fellowships are offered twice annually. Next Closing Date for
Applications is Friday 1 April 2011. At this round only applications for
visits planned for 2012/13 will be considered.

Postdoctoral Fellowships
Description:
The Heart Foundation offers Fellowships to graduates of recognised
institutions whose usual place of residence is in Australia and who
propose to engage in biomedical, clinical and public health research
related to cardiovascular disease and related disorders. The research
supported by the Fellowship must be carried out at institutions in
Australia. Applicants for these Fellowships must meet criteria of
eligibility and excellence. For postdoctoral fellowship applicants,
Australian citizens who are engaged in cardiovascular disease research
overseas may apply for a fellowship to return to Australia to continue
their cardiovascular disease research at an Australian Research
Administering Institute.
Eligibility:
These Fellowships are available to medical and science graduates who
have completed a MD or PhD award within the last five years. Fellows
should be Australian citizens or have Permanent Resident status at the
time of application.

Description:
The Heart Foundation awards 'Project' funding in the form of
Grants-in-Aid to teams of researchers for a specific piece of research
or a component of a larger project. A Grant-in-Aid can help establish a
researcher's independent career. These awards can also provide an
important source of funding to help researchers obtain the preliminary
data and evidence required to be a contender for larger funding awards
in future.
The Heart Foundation awards Grants-in-Aid to support biomedical,
clinical or public health research relevant to cardiovascular disease
and related disorders.
Amount awarded:
Grant-in-Aid funding is valued at up to $65,000p.a.
Application guide:
The closing date for Heart Foundation Grant-in-Aid applications has now
been extended until 5pm 05 April 2011 to coincide with the NHMRC Grant

Travel Grants
Description:
The Heart Foundation offers Travel Grants for Australian cardiovascular
researchers to travel overseas and present their research at an
international conference. These awards are also available to
Indigenous health researchers travelling to present their research at a
conference within Australia.
Eligibility:
* All applicants must be Australian Citizens or hold permanent
residency status
* Students studying for higher degrees (PhD, Masters etc.) and
junior Postdoctoral Fellows (no more than 5 years postdoctoral).
* Researchers may only receive one travel grant per year and up
to two travel grants during their pre and postdoctoral training.
* No more than $2,000 can be requested

Description:
A funding opportunity to progress Australia Korea S&T Linkages
The Australia-Korea Foundation (AKF), the Australian Academy of Science,
the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Australian Academy of
Technological Sciences and Engineering invite applications for their
Early Career Science and Technology Researchers (ECR) program. The ECR
program has been created to enhance Australia-Korea links in science and
technology.
This program aims to:
* Enable active Australian early career researchers (up to and
around 40 years of age) to visit Korea in order to raise and awareness
of, and interest in, Australian research experience in Korea
* Provide Australian participants with the opportunity to access
equipment, knowledge and skills not available in Australia; facilitate
the development and strengthening of personal research networks;
investigate institutional cooperative opportunities and explore
possibilities for shared research infrastructure in both countries
The ECR program supports researchers who have recently completed
postgraduate research qualifications and are currently employed in
research or academic positions. The successful applicants will have had
international exposure, be well published and keen to develop links with
Korea.

Description:
The Sea World Research and Rescue Foundation is a non-profit
organisation that seeks to promote research into marine life, and assist
in the rescue of sick, injured and stranded marine animals. Approved by
the Federal Government, the Foundation provides funding for quality
research projects incorporating the protection and preservation of the
marine environment. Although SWRRFI seeks to encourage and assist marine
sciences in the broadest sense, for the present it gives priority to
projects relating to aspects of the biology of marine vertebrates and
will consider applications from public and private sectors.
