Balzan Prizes 2011
Description:
The Balzan Prizes are chosen by the General Prize Committee in two general subject areas: Literature, Moral Sciences and the Arts; and the Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences and Medicine. The four Balzan Prizes, two per category, are awarded to scholars, artists and scientists who have distinguished themselves in their fields on an international level.
The General Prize Committee announced that the 2011 Balzan Prizes will be awarded in the following fields:
* Ancient History (The Graeco-Roman World)
· Enlightenment Studies
· Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics
· The Early Universe (from Planck-time to the First galaxies).
Self-nominations are not accepted.

Title:
Small Research Grants
Description:
The British Academy offers the Small Research Grants to enable scholars to conduct primary research in the UK or abroad. These grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences. Funds are available to facilitate initial project planning and development; to support the direct costs of research; and to enable the advancement of research through workshops, or visits by or to partner scholars. These grants are tenable for up to 24 months.
All applications should demonstrate that Academy funds are sought for a clearly defined, discrete piece of research, which will have an identifiable outcome on completion of the Academy-funded component of the research.
Eligibility:
Applications from international groups of scholars are welcome, provided there is a UK-based scholar as lead applicant.
Amount awarded:
Up to a maximum of £7,500.

Title:
Travel Grants
Description:
The CASS Travel Grants are available to assist ECR to attend international conferences. The grants are not available for travel to attend conferences being held in Australia. The grants are offered to further the career opportunities of early career Australian post-doctoral researchers by enabling them to make presentations of their research findings at international conferences/meetings/related activities where they may meet colleagues and establish the foundations for on going research collaborations.
Eligibility:
All applicants must be Australian Citizens or have a visa allowing them to remain permanently in Australia. The CASS Travel Grants program was developed to assist ECR. In most cases, CASS will consider an ECR to be a researcher who is within seven or eight years of the start of their research career.
Amount awarded:
The maximum amount of a CASS Travel Grant that may be awarded is the lesser of $6,000 or eighty percent (80%) of the "Total Cost" as disclosed on the Application Form.

21st Century Research Awards are designed to support research projects with a high probability of generating new knowledge and insights. Research Award program areas include:

Projects submitted for funding consideration should be at an early, even preliminary stage of development, and should be intended to break new ground or to challenge commonly-held assumptions.
Eligibility:
Researchers with current grant support from JSMF are not eligible to apply to the foundation for continued support of ongoing research.
Amount awarded:
A maximum of US$450,000 total costs can be requested and the funds can be expended over a minimum of 3 years or a maximum of 6 years.

Title:
Basil O'Connor Starter Scholar Research Award 2012 Program
Description:
This award is designed to support young scientists just embarking on their independent research careers. The March of Dimes defines a birth defect as any abnormality of structure or function, whether inherited, or acquired in utero and presenting in infancy or early childhood. Deviations from reproductive health of women and men as an underlying basis of birth defects, i.e. preconceptional events, prenatal course, and premature births, are appropriate subjects for research support.
Eligibility:
Grants are awarded to qualified institutions to support research on birth defects.
Basil O'Connor applicants may not be recipients of a major grant (grants exceeding $200,000 a year) at the time of the application.
Amount awarded:
These grants do not cover the recipient's salary, but do provide salary support for technical help. They may not exceed US$75,000 per year, and are awarded for two years.

Description:
The AOA Research Foundation Fund performs an important role in providing support for short-term studies (in general up to two years) and initiating long-term studies carried out by members of the AOA. The fund is also an important backup source of money for established orthopaedic research groups who receive their major financial support from other funding organisations. The Fund does not provide long-term support for projects or 'top-up' funding for ongoing studies.
Research projects may cover a broad range of clinical and laboratory investigations only if relevant to the field of orthopaedics. Special consideration will be given to those applications who propose to open up new areas of research.
Eligibility:
One of the principal investigators must be a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

Title:
Research Grants for 2012
Description:
Applications for grants to support original scientific projects on the biology and cultivation of Australian plants are invited from research workers in Australia. The Australian Flora Foundation will consider all relevant applications, with special interest in the following categories:
· conservation of Australian plant diversity, particularly where there are threats from climatic change
· plant species with potential for cultivation
· cultivation of Australian plants
· Rare and endangered plants
Priority will be given to projects aiming to reduce plant harvesting from native ecosystems
Eligibility:
Applicants must be suitably qualified or identify a qualified project supervisor.
Amount awarded:
The Foundation expects to support between two and four projects at $5,000 to $12,000 in 2012.

AW Howard Memorial Trust
Description:
The AW Howard Memorial Trust Inc awards on merit and need Grants-in-Aid to Australian organizations, associations, communities or persons that seek financial aid for projects designed to either:
· Commemorate significant contributions made to pastoral sciences or pastoral industries at National, State or Regional scales;
· Facilitate effective dissemination and publication of innovative science and extension relevant to the development, management and use of pastures within Australia or within Australian regions;
· Invite an eminent overseas pasture scientist to visit Australia to deliver a keynote address at an Australian, International or Regional conference and/or to visit major regional centres to interact with scientists and community groups involved in pastoral industries; or
· Contribute towards the purchase of essential equipment required for research and development projects in the field of pastoral sciences.
Amount awarded:
Grants-in-Aid are limited to $5000.
