Development modules for new and emerging Chief Investigators
Learning Solutions and the Research Office continue to deliver modules from the Future Research Leaders Program. These programs are designed specifically for researchers who are new Chief Investigators or for whom being a Chief Investigator is the next step.
Module 8: Project Review and Evaluation (workshop on 22 June) will be presented by Professors Judith Black, and Professor Peter Goodyear. This module aims to illustrate some of the different requirements of different project types that university researchers need to be aware of as well as the benefits of using the closeout process to identify future research opportunities and improved research practices.

Module 7: Leading & Managing People in the Research Context (workshop on 21 July) will be presented by Professor Marcella Bilek and Professor Iain McCalman. This module aims to assist researchers to reflect on their preferred leadership style, the challenge of developing a context for creative research and the ongoing management issues within the distinctive research context of fixed-term employment and narrow time frames.

Title:
Publication Subsidy Scheme
Description:
The AAH gives priority to works that require a subsidy for their viability as a publishing venture, or for the inclusion of essential items such as illustrations, photographs or maps. Support may, in some cases, be given for meritorious publications with some prospect of small-scale royalty and profit returns. Works with clear commercial prospects, however, will not be supported by the AAH. The AAH normally supports publications that have already been accepted by a reputable and refereed academic publisher.
Eligibility:
The scheme is designed to assist Humanities scholars based in Australia. Both independent scholars and those working within an institution are eligible for the scheme.
Amount awarded:
Financial support of up to AU$3,000 for the publication of scholarly works of high quality in the Humanities. In the case of in-house publications (of conference papers etc), external assessment of the work will be required.

Title:
Innovative Grants
Description:
JDRF supports highly innovative basic and clinical research that is at the developmental stage by providing "seed" money for investigative work based on sound scientific hypotheses for which preliminary data are insufficient for a regular research grant but that are likely to lead to important results for the treatment of diabetes and its complications. In the application, the investigator must specifically address how the proposal is innovative and clearly state the problem, hypothesis, methodology, and possible outcomes. These grants will be evaluated on the following criteria:
* Is the proposed research innovative?
* Is the underlining premise, goal or hypothesis plausible?
* Can the proposed research be completed in one year?
* Is the proposed research relevant to the mission of JDRF and what is its potential impact?
Eligibility:
Applicants must hold an MD, DMD, DVM, PhD, or equivalent and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school, or other research facility.
Amount awarded:
These grants provide one year of support for a maximum of US$100,000 in direct costs and indirect costs of 10%, for a total of US$110,000.

Title:
Career Development Award
Description:
JDRF fosters the development and productivity of the best and the brightest established independent researchers who will bridge the gap between the bench and bedside. The primary purpose of the Career Development Award is to attract qualified and promising scientists early in their faculty careers and to give them the opportunity to establish themselves in areas that reflect the JDRF research emphasis areas. In the five-year term of the award, awardees will focus their research efforts on a subject directly related to JDRF mission goals and research priorities, and position themselves to work at the leading edge of type 1 diabetes research. These awards are designed to assist exceptionally promising investigators. Although JDRF is especially interested in fostering careers in clinical investigation, Career Development Awards may emphasize either basic or clinical topics.
Eligibility:
Applicants must hold an MD, DMD, DVM, PhD, or equivalent and will have been received at least three but not more than seven years before the award.
Amount awarded:
up to USD$150,000 per year
Application guide:

Life Sciences Research Fellowships (Cardiovascular)
Description:
The Heart Foundation (NSW Division) has facilitated the establishment of the NSW Cardiovascular Research Network, a collaboration of Cardiovascular Research Institutes, Organisations and individuals seeking to increase funded collaborative research and support the research workforce.
The NSW Cardiovascular Research Network Life Sciences Research Fellowship (Cardiovascular) is awarded by the NSW Office for Science and Medical research in conjunction with the Heart Foundation (NSW). Two Fellowships are available.
The Research Fellowships ($100,000 per annum for 4 years and tenable for up to 5 years) are available for researchers, no less than three years and up to twelve years post doctoral, who may be completing an overseas or interstate posting and are interested in returning to NSW in 2011 to take up research positions.
The purpose of the Life Sciences Research Fellowship (Cardiovascular) is to provide salary and project support to those research organisations wishing to attract high calibre interstate or international cardiovascular researchers to New South Wales.
It is expected that the administering institution shall provide a similar level of contributory/in-kind funding as is provided by the Fellowship.

Research Grants Program 2010
Description:
The Voiceless Grants Program offers financial support to non-profit organisations, councils and universities for the design and implementation of projects which improve the lives of animals in Australia. Voiceless is particularly interested in receiving applications addressing:
* Factory farming. This includes all forms of 'industrialised farming' for food such as meat chickens, hens, pigs, cows used for dairy and beef production and other intensive systems. Projects addressing the plight of bobby calves and live export of animals will also be accepted; or
* The commercial kangaroo industry. This does not include alleged 'conservation-based' culls undertaken by Government associated entities; or
* Building animal protection as a social justice movement in Australia. Projects must apply to the whole animal movement (not a single issue) and build up broad social awareness and acceptance of animal protection. Activities may include conferences and workshops, market research, media, advertising, PR campaigns, online resources, publications etc.
Amount awarded:
up to $15,000
