RESEARCH GRANTS

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) - Innovative Grants

Introduction: JDRF supports highly innovative basic and clinical research that is at the developmental stage by providing "seed" money for investigative work based on sound scientific hypotheses for which preliminary data are insufficient for a regular research grant but that are likely to lead to important results for the treatment of diabetes and its complications. In the application, the investigator must specifically address how the proposal is innovative and clearly state the problem, hypothesis, methodology, and possible outcomes. The research plan has a strict 3-page limit.

These grants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

Ø Is the proposed research innovative?

Ø Is the underlining premise, goal or hypothesis plausible?

Ø Can the proposed research be completed in one year?

Ø Is the proposed research relevant to the mission of JDRF and what is its potential impact?

Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MD, DMD, DVM, PhD, or equivalent and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school, or other research facility.

Amount Awarded: These grants provide one year of support for a maximum of US$100,000 in direct costs and indirect costs of 10%, for a total of US$110,000.

Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is subject to University of Sydney indirect costs of up to 10%.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) - Regular Research Grant

Introduction: The purpose of the Regular Research Grant mechanism is to provide investigators with support to explore the feasibility and development of proposals that are considered to be on the leading edge of diabetes research. The primary objective of any research proposal and grant to be considered for funding should be aimed at accomplishing one or more of the following:

Ø Exploring and elucidating underlying molecular mechanisms and biochemical pathways

Ø Identifying and validating potential points of interference with the disease process

Ø Identifying and validating potential drug targets

Ø Identifying disease modifying small molecules, peptides, proteins, antibodies and cellular approaches

Ø Translating research discoveries into viable projects that can be tested in non-clinical settings

Ø Proof of concept studies in animal model systems

Ø Translating research discoveries into viable projects that can be tested in clinical settings

Ø Proof of concept studies in humans

Ø Developing commercially viable products

Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MD, DMD, DVM, PhD, or equivalent and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school, or other research facility.
