Applications are invited for the China-NSW Collaborative Research Program, designed to support collaborative scientific research of benefit to both countries. The funding program is intended to foster productive alliances and support NSW teams working with Chinese partners in research and technology. The current funding round is seeking proposals relating to the areas of traditional Chinese medicine and proteomics. The NSW Government and China have each contributed $500,000 to support the cooperative research program as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by both parties last month. For projects to be eligible for funding they must involve at least one Chinese and one NSW-based research institution with balanced work contributions. Applications for funding close on Wednesday, 20th May 2009. For more information go to www.osmr.nsw.gov.au or email info@osmr.nsw.gov.au Two New Go8 Modules for Researchers If you are a new chief investigator, or if that is the next step for you, then two new modules developed by the Go8 will help you in the key areas of managing finances and IP & commercialisation. Please note that both modules require 6-8 hours of pre-reading prior to a ? day workshop for finance and a full day workshop for IP and commercialisation. Financial, Resource and Risk Management Research projects must operate within the funding and resource constraints agreed at start-up. The researcher must therefore carefully manage the resources to ensure they support the full research life cycle. This module explores some useful principles and practices for managing the financial processes, assets and risks attached to research. For more information and to enrol for 28th May 2009 visit: http://www.usyd.edu.au/learningsolutions/research/financial.shtml Intellectual Property, Knowledge Transfer and Commercialisation This module was designed to provide university researchers with an introduction to commercialisation. An emphasis has been placed on ensuring the researcher gains a broad understanding and appreciation of the processes involved in identifying, protecting and packaging innovations for the marketplace. Such an understanding should provide a critical base for researchers wishing to participate in and appreciate the complex commercialisation process. The module is focussed on those conducting research that has a potential for commercialisation. RESEARCH GRANTS 6 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) - Innovative Grants Introduction: JDRF supports highly innovative basic and clinical research that is at the developmental stage by providing "seed" money for investigative work based on sound scientific hypotheses for which preliminary data are insufficient for a regular research grant but that are likely to lead to important results for the treatment of diabetes and its complications. In the application, the investigator must specifically address how the proposal is innovative and clearly state the problem, hypothesis, methodology, and possible outcomes. The research plan has a strict 3-page limit. These grants will be evaluated on the following criteria: ? Is the proposed research innovative? ? Is the underlining premise, goal or hypothesis plausible? ? Can the proposed research be completed in one year? ? Is the proposed research relevant to the mission of JDRF and what is its potential impact? Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MD, DMD, DVM, PhD, or equivalent and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school, or other research facility. Amount Awarded: These grants provide one year of support for a maximum of US$100,000 in direct costs and indirect costs of 10%, for a total of US$110,000. The primary objective of any research proposal and grant to be considered for funding should be aimed at accomplishing one or more of the following: ? Exploring and elucidating underlying molecular mechanisms and biochemical pathways ? Identifying and validating potential points of interference with the disease process ? Identifying and validating potential drug targets ? Identifying disease modifying small molecules, peptides, proteins, antibodies and cellular approaches ? Translating research discoveries into viable projects that can be tested in non-clinical settings ? Proof of concept studies in animal model systems ? Translating research discoveries into viable projects that can be tested in clinical settings ? Proof of concept studies in humans ? This research will commence in June 2009 with results expected to be reported by December 2009. Researchers will focus on two areas: ? Biology of the virus, including the progress of mutations, likely increase or decrease in virulence, susceptibility to antivirals, and the risk of combination with other influenza virus strains. ? Health care, including quarantining, effective population based use of antivirals, advice on public health measures and messages and the factors that put individuals at higher risk.
