Cecilia Kilkeary Foundation - Letter of Intent

Introduction: The Foundation has decided this year to concentrate the
available funds in the two areas of Medical Welfare and Social Welfare
and will regrettably not be accepting requests for the funding Medical
Research this year. They have introduced the "Letter of Intent" process
to assist in reducing the work required to make an initial application
and to assist them in focusing on those projects most likely to be
funded. The Foundation will consider the letters of intent and then ask
for final submissions from proposals meet our criteria and are
considered to have merit. The Foundation will accept up to a maximum of
three projects from each organisation, provided that fall within the
broad areas of medical or social welfare. 

Amount Awarded: up to $20,000  

Indirect Cost Recovery:  This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney
indirect costs.

The Australian Academy of the Humanities - The Publication Subsidy
Scheme     

Introduction: The AAH gives priority to works that require a subsidy for
their viability as a publishing venture, or for the inclusion of
essential items such as illustrations, photographs or maps. Support may,
in some cases, be given for meritorious publications with some prospect
of small-scale royalty and profit returns. Works with clear commercial
prospects, however, will not be supported by the AAH. The AAH normally
supports publications that have already been accepted by a reputable and
refereed academic publisher. In the case of in-house publications (of
conference papers etc), external assessment of the work will be
required.  

Eligibility: The scheme is designed to assist Humanities scholars based
in Australia. Both independent scholars and those working within an
institution are eligible for the scheme.   

Amount Awarded: Financial support of up to AU$3,000 for the publication
of scholarly works of high quality in the Humanities.

Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney
indirect costs.

Funding For Research into H1n1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Influenza) 

The Australian Government, through the National Health and Research
Council, will provide $7 million for research into the H1NI influenza 09
virus (human swine influenza). The funds will help researchers learn
more about the properties of the virus and it's potential to become more
virulent and how best to avoid and treat infection. This research will
commence in June 2009 with results expected to be reported by December
2009. Researchers will focus on two areas:

*       Biology of the virus, including the progress of mutations,
likely increase or decrease in virulence, susceptibility to antivirals,
and the risk of combination with other influenza virus strains.

*       Health care, including quarantining, effective population based
use of antivirals, advice on public health measures and messages and the
factors that put individuals at higher risk.

The NHMRC has funded over $10m for 119 studies into influenza in the
last three years.

Expressions of interest will close on Monday 22nd June.

J.O & J.R Wicking Trust- General Grants, Support Grants & Medical and
Scientific Grants 

Introduction: The JO & JR Wicking Trust was established in 2003. The
Trust provides funding to provide benefits for the blind or visually
impaired, the aged or for persons suffering from Alzheimer's disease and
includes funding research into problems associated with the above. There
are 4 categories of Grants.

*	General Grants Major Strategic Initiatives 
*	General Grants Incubation Initiative 
*	Support Grants for Rural Communities 
*	Medical & Scientific grants for research into better diagnosis
therapeutic intervention care or treatment of Alzheimer's disease and
research into cures 

Amount Awarded:  Per annum: General Grants $50,000-$180,000, Incubation
Initiatives $15,000-$50,000, Support Grants for Rural Communities
$1,000- $10,000, Medical and Scientific Research Grants $25,000-$50,000

Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is subject to University of Sydney
indirect costs.

The 2009 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture,
Fisheries and Forestry

Bright, young and motivated dairy researchers and innovators from across
the dairy supply chain will compete for grants of up to $50,000 to
further their innovative ideas and careers. Australians aged 18 to 35
who work or study in primary industries are welcome to apply. 13 winners
across a range of agricultural, forestry and fisheries industries will
receive $20,000 each to undertake a project to explore an emerging
scientific issue or innovative activity over a 12 month period. One
winner will receive an additional $30,000 as the recipient of the
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's Award, making the
premier prize a total of $50,000.
