Centre of Excellence for Local Government Endowment Fund
On the 18th November 2008, Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP announced, at the Australian Council of Local Government meeting in Canberra that $8 million in funding would be provided for a new centre of excellence for local government to enhance the professionalism of the local government sector.
The objective of the centre will be to encourage the wider adoption of innovative practices and solutions to the issues and challenges facing local government to achieve:
* an improvement in local government workforce capability to address acute skill shortages in local government management, engineering and urban planning; and
* attraction and retention of skilled staff, coordination of personnel training and development, and the establishment of local government as an employer of choice.

The British Academy- Small Research Grants
Introduction: The British Academy offers the Small Research Grants to enable scholars to conduct primary research in the UK or abroad. These grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences. Funds are available to facilitate initial project planning and development; to support the direct costs of research; and to enable the advancement of research through workshops, or visits by or to partner scholars. These grants are tenable for up to 24 months.
All applications should demonstrate that Academy funds are sought for a clearly defined, discrete piece of research, which will have an identifiable outcome on completion of the Academy-funded component of the research.
Eligibility: Applications from international groups of scholars are welcome, provided there is a UK-based scholar as lead applicant.
Amount Awarded: Up to a maximum of £7,500.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney indirect costs.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners- Family Medical Care, Education and Research Grants
Introduction: The Family Medical Care Education and Research (FMCER) grants are available for a 12 month period to provide new and emerging GP researchers with an opportunity to conduct research. Funding is available for research that benefits primary health care. Funding will not be provided for researcher salary. New and emerging researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.
Eligibility: The chief investigator must be a GP or GP registrar who is a member of the RACGP and must have a project that relates clearly too general practice.
Amount Awarded: Funding of up to $10,000.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is subject to University of Sydney indirect costs of up to 15%.

National Heart Foundation- Postdoctoral Fellowships (Biomedical, Clinical, Public Health)
Introduction: The Heart Foundation offers Fellowships to graduates of recognised institutions whose usual place of residence is in Australia and who propose to engage in biomedical, clinical and public health research related to cardiovascular disease and related disorders. The research supported by the Fellowship must be carried out at institutions in Australia. Applicants for these Fellowships must meet criteria of eligibility and excellence. For postdoctoral fellowship applicants, Australian citizens who are engaged in cardiovascular disease research overseas may apply for a fellowship to return to Australia to continue their cardiovascular disease research at an Australian Research Administering Institute.
Eligibility: These Fellowships are available to medical and science graduates who have completed a MD or PhD award within the last five years. Fellows should be Australian citizens or have Permanent Resident status at the time of application.

National Heart Foundation- Overseas Research Fellowships
Introduction: The purpose of the Heart Foundation s Overseas Research Fellowship Scheme is to support the training of Australian researchers who seek to begin or maintain a postdoctoral position investigating cardiovascular research at a relevant institution overseas. Applicants are expected to have at least two years of cardiovascular research experience.
Eligibility: Overseas Research Fellowships are available to medical and science graduates who have completed a PhD or MD award within the last 18 months. Applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent residency status.

National Heart Foundation- Career Development Fellowships
Introduction: Career Development Fellowships are the most prestigious Heart Foundation awards. The purpose of the Career Development Fellowship is to develop the career of Australian citizens or permanent residents, who are 4-10 years postdoctoral. These applicants are expected to have spent at least 4 years actively contributing to cardiovascular research in Australia. Career Development Fellowships are tenable for five years.

ARC-NZ Research Network for Vegetation Function- Working Groups
The Network's role is to encourage effective and creative collaboration between labs and across disciplines. The Network is not permitted to fund individual data-collecting research projects. The potential range of topics is wide, spanning for example molecular genetics and proteomics, evolutionary radiation, biogeography and control of distribution boundaries, ecophysiology, development and architecture, root symbioses, ecosystem processes, functional and comparative ecology, global change, forestry, rangelands, agricultural landscapes, herbivory, pollination, fire, vegetation dynamics and population dynamics, soil processes, nutrient cycles, herbivory, plant diseases, global change, quaternary landscapes, palaeoecology.
Lead applicants need not have participated in the Network previously. Applications from postgrads and postdocs will be considered just as sympathetically as applications from senior researchers. Working groups offer a mechanism to develop new syntheses, data analyses, theory and proposals, and to collaborate intensively and congenially with other researchers.

ProSPER.Net-Scopus - Young Scientist Award
The Prosper.Net-Scopus Young Scientist Award in Sustainable Development is given annually to a young scientist or researcher, based in the Asia Pacific region, who has made significant contributions in the field of sustainable development. Awards will be given in each of three areas: Business, Engineering and Technology, and Agriculture and Natural Resources.
The award is open to those engaged in graduate education and research activities that emphasize a sustainable development approach to any of the above three areas. Candidates are expected to be employed at institutions of higher education in the Asia-Pacific region, and should be less than 40 years old as of 15 November 2008.

DIISR/Japan Science and Technology Agency: Strategic Japanese-Australian Cooperative Program on Marine Science
Introduction: The Strategic Japanese-Australian Cooperative Program on Marine Science supports collaboration between Japan and Australia in the field of Marine Science to achieve world class scientific results, leading towards new innovative technologies.
Eligibility: Australian and Japanese researchers who seek to build on and reinforce on-going research activities are invited to apply
Amount Awarded: DIISR and JST will jointly choose a maximum of three collaborative projects before the end of June 2009. Total funding for the Australian partner of up to AUD $70,000 (GST exclusive) per project is available for two years, 2009/10 and 2010/11 (AUD $35,000 per year).
