However, the nature of research work means that the content and focus of these activities needs to reflect the different ways that research operates. In 2009 Learning Solutions will continue to offer programs that meet these specific development needs of researchers. 1. Development for Early Career Researchers - Biomedical Learning Solutions is seeking expressions of interest for its Early Career Researchers Program in Semester 1. The program will focus on the development needs of ECRs in the Biomedical field, particularly in the areas of: * Career planning * Working in teams * Grant writing * Communication * Networking and mentoring The program is targeted at researchers who are 1 to 10 years post-doctoral. It consists of seven half-day sessions, beginning on Friday 27 March, to be held on the Camperdown campus. Feedback on previous programs has been very positive and this course is always over-subscribed. For more information or to express your interest in joining the ECR program in Semester 1, please visit the Learning Solutions website. 2. Development for new and emerging Chief Investigators The Future Research Leaders Program is a joint collaboration with other Group of Eight Universities and comprises eight modules that explore various aspects of research project management. The trial of these modules in 2008 demonstrated that the program was very valuable and the 2009 series of modules will be very popular so don't miss out. Choose one, several or all of the modules to suit your needs now. You will find the modules are great for building a practical knowledge of research projects and how they can be effectively managed and led. Target Audience Early to mid-career researchers who are new to the role of CI (recently won grants) or who are currently working towards being in a CI role (i.e. who have already been involved in successful grants and have submitted grant applications with themselves as a CI). The program develops the skills required by those responsible for the management of research grants and projects. The focus of the program is on those who will be managing research projects, teams or budgets. For more information and to enroll please visit the Learning Solutions website. Humanities & Social Sciences NEWS 2 Australian Learning & Teaching Council (formerly Carrick Institute) Introduction: Program Priorities - Through this Program, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) provides grants for projects that build leadership capacity in ways consistent with the promotion and enhancement of learning and teaching in contemporary higher education, and which reflect the ALTC's values of excellence, inclusiveness, diversity and collaboration, and its commitment to long-term, systemic change. To identify and effectively manage the interactions that might require some alteration to human activities the Australian Government requires: * an understanding of the status of the marine mammal species (population structure, distribution, abundance and trend) * the nature and extent of the interaction, and * the options for, and likely effectiveness of, mitigation strategies Proposals are sought that deliver the highest quality science outcomes to address the most pressing marine mammal management needs. To accommodate Australia's national and international obligations, and to reflect the large-scale movements of many marine mammal species, the funding priorities will focus on the whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and dugongs of the Australasian region, including the waters of the Indian, Southern and South Pacific Oceans. Eligibility: Applicants should consider whether conservation managers will be able to use their research to minimise negative consequences of interactions between humans and marine mammals. Amount Awarded: Funding in 2009 will be considered for periods between 1 and 3 years. It is anticipated that the grant scheme will have a total value of $1,500,000 for the 2009/10 year. Please note the following advice regarding final submission to the Research Office. If you have not yet submitted anything to the RO: * If you would like us to check your application for eligibility/compliance you must submit a complete final version (three identical hard copies) by Wed 25 Feb or preferably earlier. Otherwise we may have to send your application to Canberra without checking. * If you are still working with Merrilee, Margaret or Tony on sections B10 and E, please submit a complete version of everything else (GAMS, C2/3, D2) ASAP. Final text sections can be added later. * NOTE: from Mon 23 Feb we will be checking applications at RO reception when you drop them off. You can then take away a marked up copy with any final corrections and return to us a complete final version hopefully within 24-48 hours. If you have already submitted a draft application to the RO and have received feedback: * please submit a complete final version (three identical hard copies, plus Local Submit in GAMS) as soon as you can, preferably by Mon 23 Feb. We will do one final check and contact you if there are any fixes required. This gives you time to finalise by Wed 25 Feb. * if you are yet to receive feedback, this should be coming to you shortly. Feel free to contact your designated RO checker at any time or contact Gemma on 86278111 or g.shilton@usyd.edu.au If you are not proceeding pls delete your application in GAMS. Any probs let me know ASAP. FYI - we have 386 ARC DP applications currently in GAMS. NHMRC project grant checking has now commenced and we expect >400 applications this round. This includes everyone that is still seeing Merrilee, Margaret or Tony. We will check it for you while you are here so that you can take away any corrections. B10 and E can follow later, preferably by Fri. >From tomorrow we shift focus to checking final versions for applicants that have met our advertised timelines for submission. If you submit for the first time tomorrow, please bring three final hard copies and 'Local Submit' in GAMS. Two copies will be sent to Canberra and one is retained by us. If you have received feedback from the RO, please submit your final versions (three hard copies and 'Local Submit' in GAMS) as soon as you can. We will do a final check and notify any final fixes. Any probs; please contact me ASAP. NOTE FOR ALL APPLICANTS: Unfortunately GAMS is using old RFCD and SEO codes. Most applicants have translated these old codes to the USyd internal research proposal clearance form (RPCF). We would much prefer to capture new Field of Research (FoR) codes and new SEO codes as this will help us with many other tasks including ERA. New 2008 FoR are in the 01xxxx-22xxxx range. Old RFCD = 23xxxx-44xxxx New 2008 SEO = 81xxxx - 97xxxx Old SEO = 61xxxx-78xxxx If you have not yet submitted your RPCF pls use the new codes on the form. If you have already submitted your RPCF we don't want you to complete a new one.
