From research at usyd.edu.au Mon Sep 1 11:58:32 2008 From: research at usyd.edu.au (Research Grants) Date: Mon Sep 1 11:58:37 2008 Subject: [Usyd-research-announce] Reseach Office Bulletin 1st September 2008 Message-ID: <2468A5C7FA7C7443B8F29B707EA374CE019A2061@MAIL1.mcs.usyd.edu.au> Dear University of Sydney researchers and affiliates I am delighted to advise that the first module of the University's Research Information Management System (RIMS) has gone live today, together with new and streamlined processes as part of the Research Management Program (RMP). . What is the purpose of RIMS? RIMS will enable improved and standardised research grants management processes across the University throughout the lifecycle of a research funding application, successful award and project closure. It will also enable more timely and accurate reporting within and outside the University. When will this affect me? In the first instance RIMS will be used by the Research Office and Corporate Finance Research for the management of all active research projects with internal/external funding. In the near future RIMS will be used to manage Sydnovate initiated projects. Capturing data on stand alone research scholarships and research donations/bequests will also be considered. We will progressively provide RIMS access to researchers as well as Faculty/School based research managers, administrators and finance officers. How will this affect me? The next time that you apply for a research grant or receive funding or have a report/milestone due, you will receive email advice from the Research Office notifying you of relevant information regarding the status of your application or award, or the pending due date for a report/milestone. Where necessary we will be asking you for information, such as confirmation of acceptance of the award and high-level budget scoping of the awarded funding. Every application/award will have a unique 'RIMS Project ID'. This will be included in the email notification. We ask that you include this ID in all subsequent communication with the RO regarding your application/award. We are also in the process of having forms for University of Sydney ethics and other clearances updated to include this ID so that we can cross-reference with RIMS. We have modified the Research Proposal Clearance Form (RPCF) to accommodate RIMS and new processes. Please use the new version available at: http://www.usyd.edu.au/ro/forms/rpcf.shtml We may also be in touch with you soon if we are missing important data for active projects such as the research codes (eg. RFCD, ABS) required for government reporting. It is very important to ensure that we have accurate and current data in RIMS to optimise the value of the reports that will now be available. Please also note that any communications from the Research Office will be sent to the official university email address recorded in HR. If this is not the address you usually use, please set up a forward from the HR official address to the other address to ensure that you receive relevant communications. Next steps? Later this year we will be piloting another RIMS module in conjunction with the November ARC Linkage round. Amongst other things this module obtains electronically the sort of information currently sourced from the RO Research Proposal Clearance form. Next year we will be implementing the 'Research Outputs' modules for the collection and management of publications. The current collection of 2008 publications in the existing IRMA system will continue until that time. In 2010 we will be implementing modules to support processes for obtaining ethics and other clearances. If you need any further information please check the website at http://www.usyd.edu.au/ro/rmp/welcome.shtml and/or email rmp@usyd.edu.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, the nature of research work means that the content and focus of these activities needs to reflect the different ways that research operates. In second semester The University of Sydney has launched its new development program for new and emerging chief investigators (The Future Research Leaders Program). This is a joint collaboration with other Group of Eight universities culminating in the development of nine purpose-built learning modules designed specifically for Go8 researchers. "I found the written materials very useful. Well structured and comprehensive - I'm sure I'll refer back to these from time to time. The opportunity to ask questions of the presenters too was valuable. I think the researchers attending realized that many problems were common across their peers." Comment from an attendee at one of the trial modules. Each module is in three parts: * On line material and activities to be read and completed prior to a workshop * A guided conversation with an experienced researcher * Attendance at a workshop (Workshops held at the Darlington Centre - Camperdown Campus) Module 1: Research Strategy and Planning (workshop on October 22) to be presented by Prof Stephen Simpson, Merilee Robb and Warwick Dawson. This module aims to provide you with some guidance on how to create a research project concept and proposal, and an introduction to the process of planning and managing the research project to its successful completion. Please note that this course is currently full however please register your interest for future courses. Module 3: Governance and Compliance (workshop on November 14) to be presented by Prof David Cook. This module considers responsible conduct in research and how you can take maximum advantage of your university's governance and compliance requirements to build research strength and leadership. It aims to give you an understanding of the trust placed in people and in institutions that conduct research. You will also gain an appreciation that robust research requires integrity embodied in a commitment to intellectual honesty and personal responsibility for one's action. Module 4: Intellectual Property, Knowledge Transfer and Commercialisation (workshop on October 13) to be presented by experts in the commercialisation field from Sydnovate. This module was designed to provide university researchers with an introduction to commercialisation. An emphasis has been placed on ensuring the researcher gains a broad understanding and appreciation of the processes involved in identifying, protecting and packaging innovations for the marketplace. Such an understanding should provide a critical base for researchers wishing to participate in and appreciate the complex commercialisation process. The module is focused on those conducting research that has a potential for commercialisation. Module 5: Financial Resource and Risk Management (workshop on October 30) to be presented by staff from Financial Services. The aim of this module is to equip you with the financial skills to properly cost, manage and report on research projects for which you are responsible. Module 6: Grant and Contract Administration (workshop on December 10) to be presented by Prof Jill Trewhella and Warwick Dawson. This module explores the nature of research grants and contracts. It examines the principles of effective grant management and explores the responsibilities of the researcher with respect to the execution and reporting of project outcomes. It is essential for any researcher with responsibility for a grant execution. Module 7: Leading and Managing People in the Research Context (workshop on December 4) to be presented by Prof Marcela Bilek. This module explores the nature of research grants and contracts. It examines the principles of effective grant management and explores the responsibilities of the researcher with respect to the execution and reporting of project outcomes. It is essential for any researcher with responsibility for a grant execution. There are only a few places available on this course - however please still register your interest for future courses.
