POSTPONED: The Australian Research Council and Australian Bureau of Statistics: Joint road-show to Higher Education Institutions: Hosted by the University of Sydney 

The Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will be providing an information session regarding Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative and the recently released Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC).

Senator Kim Carr announced today the appointment of Professor John Hearn (USyd) as a member to the Board on the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. "Professor Hearn has extensive experience as a scientific advisor to the Australian Government and has served on a variety of international and Australian steering groups and committees."

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)- Joint-funded research program 2008/2009  

 

Introduction: Educational institutions and suitably qualified individuals are invited to apply for funding to undertake applied research projects in relation to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  The IELTS Joint Research Committee is interested in supporting external researchers to conduct quality research under the three headings below. This year we would particularly encourage applications to undertake research studies which fit within these broad areas:

1.     Test development and validation issues  

2.     Issues relating to contexts of test use

3.     Issues of test impact

Amount Awarded: Individual projects selected will in principle be limited to a maximum of £15,000/AU$36, 000.

Cystic Fibrosis Australia- 2009 Research Grants   

 

Introduction: The 2009 Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Grant Applications are now open.  The aim of CRA is to facilitate and promote the provision of optimal care to all people affected by Cystic Fibrosis and ensure they have the best possible quality of life. The Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust (ACFRT) seeks to allocate funds for high quality research at a national level. The Trust will only support research that has been assessed and recommended by the scientific community.

Kidney Health Australia- Seeding Grants 

 

Introduction: Kidney Health Australia provides funding for seeding grant for up to an optional maximum of two years for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract.  The application should be for a genuinely new research idea.  It is not appropriate to provide seeding grants to existing projects, which have already received support from Kidney Health Australia or other granting bodies, or as part funding of a longer ongoing project.

Eligibility: The grants will be for biomedical research work to be carried out by Australians in Australia.

Amount Awarded: $15,000 per year (or more depending on MSAC consideration)  

Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney indirect costs.

Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol Office (MHDAO)- NSW Health Drug and Alcohol Research Grants Program: Expressions of Interest 

 

Introduction: This grants program helps MHDAO fulfil its responsibility under the Drug Summit funding, NSW Health Drug and Alcohol Plan and drug and alcohol issues across the state.  Applicants must clearly state under which 'category' their application is to be assessed:

*      Workforce

*      Alcohol Interventions

*      Psychostimulants (evaluation, withdrawal, mental health)

*      Other Clinical Programs

Eligibility:  The research must be based on NSW populations, and an investigator or industry partner must be based in NSW.

Amount Awarded: A total amount of approximately $400,000 will be awarded in 2008/09.

The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme- Research Applications  

 

Introduction: The Committee will assess Applications with complete discretion on the basis of the following selection criteria: 

(a) the adequacy of the conceptual frame-work, hypotheses, design, methods and analyses in relation to the aims of the Research;

(b) the degree of originality and innovation expressed by the Research aims;

(c) the degree to which the Research uses or explores novel concepts, approaches and methods;

(d) the degree to which the project challenges paradigms or assumptions, develops new methods or techniques, or addresses under-explored or unexplored areas and permits an investigator to explore or test out new concepts that would not otherwise be studied;

(e) the relevance of the Research to the effects of alcohol consumption on humans;

(f) the extent to which the aims of the Research, if achieved, will lead to testable hypotheses;

(g) the extent to which the aims of the Research, if achieved, will have a significant impact on the scientific area to which it relates;

(h) whether the Applicant can demonstrate they have the skills and knowledge necessary to manage the Research. 

Eligibility: To be eligible to receive a Grant, an Administering Institution must be a university, hospital, area health service or research institution located within Australia that currently conducts medical research;

Amount Awarded: The amount of a Grant will be set by the Committee at its complete discretion, but will not usually exceed $35,000.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)- Research Grants

 

Introduction: The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention offers the following research grants:
Distinguished Investigator Grants 
For up to US$100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide. 
Standard Research Grants 
For up to US$75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level. 
Young Investigator Grants 
For up to US$85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator's research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator. 
Pilot Grants
Of up to US$30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations. 

Eligibility: Investigators from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply, and both basic science and applied research projects will be considered.

National Heart Foundation- Travel Grants

 

Introduction: The National Heart Foundation offers Travel Grants to junior researchers working in the area of cardiovascular disease or related areas. Travel grants are open to Australian citizens or Permanent Residents. Applicants must be based in Australia.  All applications submitted in a round will be considered competitively and awards will be offered by rank based on merit.

Eligibility: Students studying for higher degrees (PhD, Masters etc.) and junior Postdoctoral Fellows (no more than 5 years postdoctoral).  

Amount Awarded: No more than AUD$2,000 can be requested and applies to all applications.  

Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney indirect costs.

Australia-China Agricultural Technical Cooperation (ATC) Program- Projects 2008/09

 

Introduction: The ATC Program seeks to build capacity across relevant Chinese government agencies and industry to:

*      produce outcomes closely linked with areas of Australian interest in agricultural trade with China

*      address a range of issues relevant to both Australia and China to further strengthen the bilateral relationship. 

The program is intended to draw upon Australia's expertise in agricultural development, rural adjustment, supply chain management, quarantine management and environmental management.  

Eligibility: Project applicants must be from within DAFF or other Commonwealth government entities; State government agencies; Australian industry or educational organisations; or Australian businesses.

Australian Antarctic Division- 2009/10 Australian Antarctic Research Applications

 

Introduction: The AAD (part of the Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts) seeks to promote Antarctic policy which is based on the region's strategic, scientific, environmental and potential economic importance for Australia. The Government's key goals for the Antarctic Program are:

*      maintaining the Antarctic Treaty System and enhancing Australia's influence within the System 

*      to protect the Antarctic environment 

*      to understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system 

*      to undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

Eligibility: AAS Grants support research by investigators based at any of the following Australian organisations: universities, university-funded staff in Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) or other tertiary education institutions. 

Amount Awarded: The maximum level of funding for an individual grant is $30,000 (GST exclusive). In 2009-2010 a small number of larger grants (up to a maximum of $60,000) may be awarded to projects considered to be multidisciplinary in their approach.
