This year's theme Enhancing Quality Research: a Global Perspective will provide the forum with a specific focus on research while still allowing parallel streams on the various broader aspects of institutional research. Institutional researchers in universities and other research intensive organisations have a unique opportunity to contribute to their institutions' understanding of their research effort and in benchmarking the quality of their research by: * Supporting policy initiatives through the analysis of strategic outcomes; * Benchmarking research performance across sectors and over time (and increasingly more into the future); * Analysing pathways through which students/staff move into research areas; and * Involving themselves in the development and implementation of either local or national frameworks for monitoring research activities. It is expected that participants will largely be directors and staff of Research Offices who will be using the classification for funding and data collection purposes. The ERA initiative, currently being developed by the ARC will assess research quality using a combination of metrics and expert review by committees comprising experienced, internationally-recognised experts. The presentation will outline the proposed approach to ERA, and discuss the ERA Consultation Paper, scheduled for release in May. The session will provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions regarding ERA and its implementation. The ARC will also discuss the upcoming ranked outlets consultation process. The Australian Research Council and Australian Bureau of Statistics will be conducting a joint road-show to Higher Education Institutions in capital cities during May to raise awareness of the 2008 Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification. The presentation will take approximately 2 hours and will discuss the new classification and how it differs from the 1998 version, concordances between the old and new classification, and provide an opportunity to ask questions. For this purpose, WADA invites applications for its Social Science Research Grant Program. * Increasing knowledge of causes of doping behaviour and of risk and protective factors * Evaluating anti-doping intervention * Improving social science research on doping prevention (e.g., design and validation of measurement tools, behavioural models, specific cultural or regional perspectives, etc.) Within the priorities of its 2009 Program, WADA will favour projects that explore the relationship between the athlete and his/her environment (coaches, parents, the media, teammates, etc.) with regards to doping behaviours. Eligibility: Please refer to the website link below for more information. Amount Awarded: The average budget of previously funded projects: One year projects: US$17,420 Two year projects: US$30,300 Three year projects: US$64,000 Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney indirect costs. RESEARCH GRANTS 6 The National Breast Cancer Foundation of Australia (NBCF)- Research Grant Program: Phase 1 (Think Tanks) 2008 Introduction: NBCF believes we need to be responsive to breast cancer research progress and opportunities nationally and internationally and maximise our use of limited resources. The first step in the process will involve funding of think-tanks to bring together groups of investigators, recognised experts in their respective fields, with complementary abilities to formulate convincing plans for specific, collaborative projects, to allocate research roles and tasks, and to identify necessary resources. Applications are invited from collaborative groups of interdisciplinary investigators, to convene a workshop with the scope to further develop a significant larger-scale and/or cutting-edge national research program. The NBCF's expectation is that a group would consist of 3 - 6 investigators. Eligibility: The Administering Institution/Organisation and the Chief Investigator(s) will jointly make an application. Collaborating institutions must be clearly identified in the application. Amount Awarded: The NBCF will provide funding for several think tanks, up to a maximum value of $15,000 each, to support travel and venue costs.
