On the 26 March 2008, Senator Kim Carr announced a number of
enhancements to ARC funding schemes, including the promotion of
international engagement in collaborative research. The media release is
available at:
http://www.arc.gov.au/media/releases/media_26March08.htm
The ARC is currently exploring the opportunity to implement significant
changes to the Linkage Projects scheme to take effect for applications
in the current round. These changes include:
1. Permitting the use of ARC funds for international travel for PIs;
2. Removing the citizenship/residency requirements for APAI and APAI-IT
students;
3. Making provision so preference may be given to award APDIs to
candidates who have the potential to enhance international
collaboration.
Re 2 above, this provides an excellent opportunity to source stipend
funding for high quality international research students. At USyd we
will use existing ranking and selection processes for international
research scholarships (EIPRS/USydIS) including H1E eligibility
requirements. Under USydIS, fee waivers for eligible students are
available with approval of the CFO/DVCR and the Dean of the relevant
Faculty. Advertising will still be required (normally via website)
unless students are named in the application (and they meet eligibility
criteria). This opportunity is open to all suitably qualified
international students but is perhaps most accessible to international
students already here doing Hons or who have recently finished.
The ARC is expecting to shortly release an updated version of the
Linkage Projects funding rules for funding commencing in 2009 (which
will incorporate relevant changes), along with the Linkage Projects
application form in GAMS and associated documentation. We will release
USyd strategic advice and instructions shortly after the release of the
ARC rules.
The ARC expects that the closing time for submission of proposals in
round 1 will be extended until 5:00pm (AEST) 23rd May 2008. The internal
closing date at USYD will now be 28th APRIL 2008.
The changes will take effect only for current and future funding rounds.
