Department of Communication Information Technology & Arts (DCITA)- Backing Indigenous Ability (BIA)-Telecommunications Program
Introduction: The purpose of the Australian Government's $36.6 million Backing Indigenous Ability ("BIA") telecommunications program is to improve the delivery and use of telecommunications services in Indigenous communities, particularly those in remote areas. Adequate communications services are essential to implement basic and lasting improvements for Australia's Indigenous people. Communities need access to telecommunications services to participate in Australia's economic, social and cultural activity.
The program has six elements:
1. Telephones
2. Internet access
3. Videoconferencing
4. Training
5. Indigenous online content
6. Regional Agents.
Organisations are invited to apply under one, some or all of Elements 2-Internet access, 3-Videoconferencing, 4-Training and 5-Indigenous online content, by completing the applicable parts of the Application form.

The Wenner-Gren Foundation- Post PhD Research Grants and International Collaborative Research Grants
Introduction: The Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Inc. is a private operating Foundation that is dedicated to the advancement of anthropology throughout the world.
Post-PhD Research Grants
Up to US$25,000 are awarded to individuals holding a Ph.D. or equivalent degree to support individual research projects. Applicants must be engaged in research that contributes to anthropological knowledge. Applicants of any nationality or country of residence may apply.
International Collaborative Research Grants (ICRG)
Up to US$30,000 to support research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills together. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources.
* Please note: Expressions of Interest must be sent to the Foundation at least 1 month prior to 'full application' deadline of 1st December 2007.
* All EOI's must be sent to Sherridan Blackman in the Research Office no later than Monday 22nd October 2007.

Law and Justice Foundation- General Grants
Introduction: The Law and Justice Foundation's grants program supports projects that meet the Foundation's objects of improving access to justice, particularly for socially and economically disadvantaged people.
General Grants
General grants are financial grants over $5,000 and are allocated by the Foundation's Board of Governors. Preference will, however, be given to applications initiated at the community level or with substantial community input.
Small Grants
Small grants are grants of $5,000 or less (GST inclusive) and can be allocated by the Director of the Law and Justice Foundation. The aim of the small grants program is to provide financial assistance to organisations planning projects that meet the Foundation's objects. Small grants can be applied for at any time, and decision making takes approximately eight weeks.
In-Kind Grants
An in-kind grant provides access to the Foundation's in-house research expertise and knowledge. Examples of in-kind grants include the development of surveys and questionnaires; data analysis; literature reviews and training. You're encouraged to discuss your project proposal with the Foundation at the early stages of project planning, before preparing an application. In-kind grants can be applied for at any time.

University of Sydney: Macleay Museum- 2008 Macleay Miklouho-Maclay Fellowship
Introduction: Applications are invited from candidates for the 2008 Macleay Miklouho-Maclay Fellowship. The Macleay Museum and the Miklouho-Maclay Society to enable a Research Fellow to work at the Macleay Museum in the fields of interest of Sir William Macleay (1820-1891) and Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay (1846-1888). There is no specific application form. Candidates should submit their research proposal together with a curriculum vitae.

Eligibility: A Fellow shall be a suitably qualified graduate of any tertiary institution approved by the Academic Board or an individual with an established scholarly reputation.

Information Seminar - Cancer Council NSW
On 30th October, 2007 the University of Sydney will play host to a seminar conducted by the Cancer Council of NSW.
The seminar will address issues such as:
* What is The Cancer Council NSW grant review process?
* Where and how does consumer review fit in?
* How do you effectively fill out a consumer review form to maximise your chance of success?
There will be a general question and answer session and it is anticipated that the seminar will be extremely useful for those researchers intending to seek Cancer Council funding in future years.

University of Sydney: Brain & Mind Research Institute- A&PD Symposium
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to a full day symposium (program attached) at the BMRI. The morning session focuses on novel technologies (mass spectrometry, ENU mutagenesis, miRNA regulation, lentiviral approaches, low-density neuronal cultures, synchrotron X-ray microscopy, asf) with a disease angle, whereas in the afternoon the program focuses more on pathomechanisms in AD, PD and MSA.
The keynote lecture is given by Prof. Przybylski from the University of Constance (Germany). Professor Przybylski is a world expert in mass spectrometry (such as LA-ICPMS and MALDI-FTICR-MS). The other 18 speakers of the A&PD symposium are from the University of New South Wales, the University of Melbourne, the CMRI, the Garvan Institute, James Cook University and the University of Sydney.

The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society- Specialised Centre of Research Program: Letter of Intent
Introduction: The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society (The Society) is the world's largest voluntary health organisation dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The Society's Specialized Centre of Research (SCOR) research grant program was developed to encourage the interaction of complementary sciences, including basic, translational and clinical sciences focused on the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. The Program is intended to bring together senior investigators from one or many institutions to develop a focused research Centre, foster new interactions and cooperation, and enhance interdisciplinary research among the participants that is directly relevant to improved treatment or prevention of leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree, and work in domestic or foreign non-profit organizations, such as universities, colleges, hospitals or laboratories.

National Drug Law Enforcement Research Fund (NDLERF)- Research Grants
Introduction: The NSW Health Drug and Alcohol Research Grants Program are administered through the Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol Office. Each year a number of research grants are allocated to continue to contribute towards evidence based practice drug and alcohol services and programs in NSW. The ATSE Crawford Fund- Fellowship for 2007
The aim of the Fellowship is to provide further training of a scientists in agriculture, fisheries or forestry from a selected group of developing countries whose work has shown significant potential. The training will take place at an Australian agricultural institution and will emphasize the application of knowledge to increased agricultural production in the Fellow's home country.
The Fellowship is offered annually to an agricultural scientist below the age of 35 years who is a citizen of, or who is working in, one the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Is, Tonga, Tuvalu and Kirabati, Vanuatu,Viet-Nam.

Technion: Israel Institute of Technology- Harvey Prize
The Harvey Prize is awarded annually in a variety of disciplines within the categories of Science & Technology and Human Health. The Harvey Prize has also been awarded for Contribution to Peace in the Middle East. There are no restrictions as to nationality, age and sex. Nominators may propose candidates from all over the world, not restricted to their own countries. Technion Honorary Doctorate recipients will be considered only after a lapse of 5 years since receiving the Honorary Doctorate. Two awards of $75,000 each are made annually.

Volvo Environment Prize
The Volvo Environment Prize was formally instituted by the Volvo Annual Shareholders, with the objective of promoting research and development across the environmental spectrum, by acknowledging people who have made an outstanding contribution to understanding or protecting the environment through scientific, socio-economic or technological innovation or discovery of global or regional importance.

Introduction: The objective of the Telecommunications Research Grants program is to support the conduct of high-quality, innovative research projects into the social, economic, environmental or technological implications of telecommunications developments, in order to increase public knowledge and stimulate debate.
Priority research topics nominated for 2007-08:
* issues surrounding the provision of broadband infrastructure and access, particularly in remote, outer regional or outer metropolitan areas
* socio-economic impacts of telecommunications developments
* the impact of the digitalisation of telecommunication services on access to telecommunications by people with disabilities and/or the aged
* issues surrounding the innovative uses of telecommunications by or for Indigenous communities.
Eligibility: Applications for project funding are invited from academic research institutions, commercial or community-based research organisations, and individuals with experience in telecommunications research.
Amount Awarded: A total of up to $100 000 (GST exclusive) is currently expected to be available for the 2007-08 funding round, for one or more projects.

Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC): E-Concept
Introduction: The GRDC's portfolio consists of research projects, technology transfer and commercialisation of new technologies. This process includes extensive consultation with industry and stakeholders. As a consequence, the vast majority of the Corporation's investments will be made through open tender, limited tender and by direct negotiation. The GRDC understands that new ideas are the life-blood of the grains industry. The E-Concept provides a formal mechanism for anyone, at anytime, to put forward an idea to the Corporation for consideration.
* The E-Concept form is not an opportunity for researchers to submit traditional preliminary research proposals or to extend existing projects.

Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing (APAC) National Facility- Call for applications to the 'Merit Allocation Scheme' for Jan 2008 - Dec 2008
Introduction: The APAC National Facility provides internationally competitive computational services for Australian researchers. The APAC partners also provide mid-range computational systems for the use of researchers within the partner organisation. Users can access the National Facility or Partner facilities either directly or via National Grid middleware. The APAC Merit Allocation Scheme provides resources on the National Facility and the National Grid to projects based on merit. The scheme also provides data resources on the National Facility.
Eligibility: Any staff member of an Australian Higher Education Institution may apply.

The Tarac Environment Future Fund (TEFF)- Applications
Introduction: Tarac Environmental Future Fund is targeted at professionals and organisations that have an interest in developing innovative solutions for improving winery waste management and to increase the body of knowledge in this area. Funding will be granted to applicants with proposals that are not only unique and innovative but that have the potential for providing solutions that can be rapidly (1-2 years) commercialised.
