eResearch Forum 2007
Featuring an address by Rhys Francis and speakers from the University of
Sydney, eResearch 2007 will focus on:
* Raising awareness of eResearch activities
* Information sharing and networking among those engaged in
eResearch
* Providing information about University of Sydney eResearch
services, initiatives and policies
* Discussion of issues related to eResearch
* Providing an informal space for researchers to engage with policy
makers
The forum will be held on 1st November 2007, at the Refectory, within
the Holme Building on Camperdown Campus.
* Registration is free and attendance open to anyone within and
beyond the University of Sydney.

Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade: Australia-Japan Foundation-
Grants Program
Introduction: The Australia-Japan Foundation (AJF) invites funding
applications for major and community-based project proposals in support
of its objectives, which are to:
* increase understanding in Japan of shared interests with
Australia;
* increase understanding in Australia of the importance of Japan to
Australia as an economic and strategic partner; and
* increase recognition in Japan of Australian excellence and
expertise.
Funding priority will be given to projects which seek to strengthen
Australia's bilateral relationship with Japan in the following areas:
Economics and Trade; Security, Regional and International Relations;
Education; Science and Technology; Arts; Media; and Sport.
Eligibility: Please refer to the website link below for more

Amount Awarded: Grants are generally be limited to a maximum of
AUD$10,000.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney
indirect costs.

CEO to present NHMRC's research funding outcomes and future challenges
around the country
Professor Warwick Anderson, Chief Executive Officer of NHMRC is holding
a series of open discussion sessions covering a wide range of issues
including success rates in the 2007 funding round, improving peer
review, supporting our health and medical researchers, the rising costs
of research, supporting biomedical, clinical, public health and health
services research, the commercialisation of research and an analysis of
NHMRC supported research achievements.
This is an opportunity to hear, and discuss NHMRC's current research
support outcomes, and NHMRC's consideration of addressing the
forthcoming challenges in health and medical research in the 21st
century. All are welcome:

Information Seminar - Cancer Council NSW
On 30th October, 2007 the University of Sydney will play host to a
seminar conducted by the Cancer Council of NSW.
The seminar will address issues such as:
* What is The Cancer Council NSW grant review process?
* Where and how does consumer review fit in?
* How do you effectively fill out a consumer review form to
maximise your chance of success?
There will be a general question and answer session and it is
anticipated that the seminar will be extremely useful for those
researchers intending to seek Cancer Council funding in future years.

Asthma Foundation NSW- 2008 Research Program Awards
Introduction: The Asthma Foundation of NSW supports and informs people
with asthma how best to achieve as full and healthy a lifestyle as
possible while controlling their asthma. The Foundation makes a number
of annual research project grants for projects submitted to the NHMRC
involving asthma that achieved a high score but were not funded for the
following year. In this way the Foundation Grants aim to assist new and
emerging research work to continue to develop to a level where it can
attract other more significant funding.
Eligibility: Project Grants are ordinarily awarded to institutions with
appropriate research facilities in NSW or ACT.
Amount Awarded: Grants valued up to $50,000.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney
indirect costs.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) Program
Project Grants: Letter of Intent
Introduction: JDRF Program Projects provide a mechanism to stimulate new
collaborations between clinical and basic scientists and/or between
scientists from diverse backgrounds as a means to conceive and develop
new approaches to persistent obstacles to progress along the various
paths to a cure for type 1 Diabetes and its complications. JDRF Program
Projects must have a central theme highly relevant to the priority areas
of research for JDRF. Program Projects should have a set of clearly
defined goals that can be met within a 3-year period.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MD, DMD, DVM, PhD, or equivalent
and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university,
medical school, company, or other research facility.
Amount Awarded: A maximum of US$660,000 total costs per year for a
period of up to 3 years.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is subject to University of Sydney
indirect costs of up to 10%.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)- Pilot Grants,
Standard Research Grants, Distinguished Investigator Grants and Young
Investigator Grants
Introduction: The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention offers the
following research grants:
Distinguished Investigator Grants
For up to US$100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the
level of associate professor or higher with an established record of
research and publication on suicide.
Standard Research Grants
For up to US$75,000 over two years are awarded to individual
investigators at any level.
Young Investigator Grants
For up to US$85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the
level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of
$75,000 for the investigator's research, these grants provide an
additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide
researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
Pilot Grants
Of up to US$30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at
any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have
the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.
Eligibility: Investigators from all academic disciplines are eligible to
apply, and both basic science and applied research projects will be
considered, providing the study has an essential focus on suicide or
suicide prevention.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney
indirect costs.

Seaworld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund- Grant Applications
Introduction: The SeaWorld Bush Gardens Conservation Fund mission is to
work with purpose and passion on behalf of wildlife and habitats
worldwide, encouraging sustainable solutions through support of species
research, animal rescue and rehabilitation and conservation education.
Grant applications are accepted year-round by organisations and
individuals worldwide. All applications must be received in an
electronic format (via email or on CD) by December 1st of the previous
year.
Eligibility: Please refer to the website link below for more
information.
Amount Awarded: The Fund has supported projects ranging from US$5,000 to
$25,000.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is subject to University of Sydney
indirect costs of up to 15%. (There may be exceptions to these limits,
based on the specific nature and need of the project.)

Australian Research Council Nanotechnology Network (ARCNN)- Short and
Long Term Visits & Travel Grants
Introduction: The ARCNN invites suitable applicants for Long & Short
Term Visits and Travel Grants:
Long Term Visits
Are usually up to 3 months in duration (some up to 6 months will be
considered) with funding up to $2,000 per month for travel and
accommodation within Australia.
Short Term Visits
Are usually up to 2 weeks in duration with funding up to $1,000 for
travel and accommodation within Australia.
Travel Grants
Travel Grants are for attendance at workshops, conferences, summer and
winter schools and short courses. Funding up $1,000 for travel,
registration and accommodation with Australia.
Eligibility: You must be or become a member of the ARCNN to apply for
these schemes.
Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney
indirect costs.

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP)- Short Term Fellowships
Introduction: Short-Term Fellowships are awarded for periods of 2 weeks
to 3 months. They will not be awarded for a series of multiple visits to
the host laboratory. The length of time must be justified on the basis
of need to perform experiments, learn techniques or to use facilities
that are only available at the host institution. The scope of HFSP
funding ranges from biological functions at the molecular and cellular
level up to biological systems including cognitive functions. Within
this broad area, all levels of analysis are supported, from studies on
genes and individual molecules, intracellular networks, intercellular
associations in tissues and organs, to networks underlying complex
functions of entire organisms.
Eligibility: Candidates must have obtained or be about to obtain their
research doctorate (PhD) or a doctoral-level degree (e.g. a research
based M.D. or medical PhD) with a proven record of experience in basic
experimental research.
