Fulbright Scholarships for Australian Citizens available in 2008 include the following types of scholarships:
* Professional - up to A$25,000
For mid-career professionals in the private and public sector to undertake training or research programs in the U.S. The scholarship is open to people in academic institutions whose primary research focus is professional or industry based. This scholarship supports a 3-4 month program.
* Senior Scholars - up to A$30,000
For academics (at Associate Professor or Professor level) to undertake research or teaching at U.S. institutions. This scholarship supports a 4-6 month program.
* Postgraduate - up to A$40,000
For postgraduate students to undertake research towards Australian postgraduate studies or to enrol in a U.S. postgraduate course. This award supports an 8-12 month program.
* Postdoctoral - up to A$30,000
For researchers who have completed their PhD in the last 5 years to undertake postdoctoral research in the U.S. This scholarship supports a 3-12 month program.
Fulbright Applications for 2008 will open on 1st June 2007 and close 31st August 2007.

The Carrick Institute- Discipline Based Initiatives
Introduction: The introduction of the Carrick Institute Discipline-Based Initiatives Scheme provides an important opportunity to encourage greater sharing of quality practice, initiatives and learning within and across discipline communities.
This scheme will fund initiatives undertaken by cross-sector affiliations of discipline-based leaders. The intention is that they will engage with their related professional, industry and community stakeholders in identifying contemporary and future-oriented challenges to that have relevance to the preparation of graduates of the discipline.
The Scheme is initially based around the following funding schemes:
* Pilot Schemes
* Discipline-Based Investigations, Review and Scoping Funds
* Higher Education Enterprise
* Common Curriculum Issues

Gambling Research Australia (GRA)- Grants Program under the theme of Indigenous gambling and problem gambling
Introduction: The Applicant's research topic must be directly related to the Indigenous gambling theme and should be related to one or more of the key questions identified in the Applicant Information Pack. The theme of Indigenous gambling and problem gambling is a broad topic that encompasses several elements.
Below are key questions which are considered to be of most use to the GRA within this topic:
* What is the extent of participation in gambling by members of the Indigenous communities and what is the nature of that participation?
* What types of gambling are preferred and why they are preferred?
* Are there cultural, linguistic, gender and demographic variations to both levels of participation rates and preferred gambling activities? What is the nature of these variations?
* What are the particular risk factors for Indigenous gamblers?
* What are the consequences of gambling and problem gambling behaviour on Indigenous communities?
Eligibility: Submissions can only be received from individuals who have the right to work in Australia.

International Dyslexia Association (IDA)- MSI Grant Program
Introduction: The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) announces a competitive grant program to stimulate scientific investigation of the contribution of multi-sensory components in structured-language reading instruction-particularly for students at risk for academic failure or underachievement, such as those with dyslexia. The main selection criteria for awards are (a) scientific rigor, and (b) potential to advance understanding of the value of multisensory elements in effective reading instruction (i.e., evidence-based instruction that explicitly addresses multiple components of oral and written language in an integrated, systematic, and cumulative manner.)
Eligibility: International submissions are welcome.
Amount Awarded: MSI Grant Program will provide up to US$20,000 for one year.

March of Dimes- Research Program 2008
Introduction: March of Dimes invites applications for research grants directed at the prevention of birth defects. Research subjects appropriate for support by the March of Dimes include basic biological processes governing development, genetics, clinical studies, studies of reproductive health, environmental toxicology, and social and behavioural studies. The Letter of Intent must include the following information in this order:
1. The objective.
2. The relevance to birth defects or reproductive health.
3. The hypothesis or hypotheses to be tested.
4. Preliminary data.
5. A statement of the methods of procedure.
6. A plan for evaluating the results.
7. Current financial support: list each current grant or contract for the conduct of this research. If there are no other grants, state "NONE."
8. If this is a request for a renewal of a current March of Dimes grant or Basil O'Connor phase-in application, it must include a summary of its progress
Eligibility: All qualified scientists with faculty appointments or the equivalent, at universities, hospitals and research institutions.

The Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation- Senior Medical Research Fellowship & Clinical Investigatorship
Introduction: The Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation invites applications for the Senior Medical Research Fellowship & Clinical Investigatorship:
Senior Medical Research Fellowship
Applications for a five-year Senior Medical Research Fellowship valued at $195,000 per annum to be held in Australia to commence in 2008. The applicant is medically or scientifically qualified to at least the postdoctoral level, and been working at a postdoctoral level for less than ten (10) years and does not currently hold a senior research or teaching position.
Applicants will be required to nominate two referees as well as a sponsor, who will normally be the Head of the Department, Division or Section of the Academic Institution in which the applicant wishes to work.
Clinical Investigatorship
Applications are invited for Clinical Investigator awards of $60,000, given on a once only basis. Eligible applicants will be medical graduates or graduates of other clinical disciplines who have completed both their clinical and research training which will normally be at doctoral level.

University of Sydney & Australian National University- Menzies Foundation Fellowship
Introduction: The Menzies Centre for Health Policy is a joint venture between The Australian National University and the University of Sydney, funded by the Menzies Foundation. The Centre examines performance and community expectations of the Australian Health Care system. We are looking for a dynamic and innovative researcher to fill a position as Menzies Foundation Fellow. He or she will contribute to the national profile of the Centre in policy research, the translation of research into policy and the promotion of informed debate.
Eligibility: Level C Research Academic will normally have a relevant doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing together with subsequent research experience.
Amount Awarded: ANU - $81,171 - $93,181pa plus 17% super; USYD - $86,291 - $99,499pa plus 17% super

Australian Museum- Eureka Prizes 2007
Introduction: Presented annually by the Australian Museum, the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes reward excellence in the fields of scientific research & innovation, science leadership, school science and science journalism & communication. The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes are the largest partnership scheme undertaken by the Australian Museum. Currently there are 26 companies, organizations and individuals in partnership with the Australian Museum including the University of Sydney's Faculty of Science, to present the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes.
Eligibility: The work entered in these prizes must have been undertaken in Australia by an Australian citizen(s) or Australian resident(s).
Amount Awarded: There are 20 prizes worth over $200 000 in the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes for 2007.

Australian Academy of Science- University of Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellowship
Introduction: Applications are invited for an award under the Scheme for Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellowships in either a Clinical Medicine or Medical Science department of the University. The Trustees will pay direct, economy class return air fares for the appointee, his/her spouse, and children up to the age of 18 years. A generous baggage allowance is also given.
