RESEARCH GRANTS
7
National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC)- Development Grants
Introduction: The NHMRC Development Grants Scheme aims to support the
development of health or medical research that has commercial potential
and the
potential to benefit the Australian community; and provide funding for
research commercialisation at the early proof-of-concept stage.
Applicants are encouraged to have a commercial partner, however this is
not essential. The scheme is pitched at the perceived funding gap
between the end of a high quality basic research program and the
developments required to make the project commercially attractive to
potential investors i.e. funding for the research to commercialisation
phase. The scheme is not intended to be an alternative to the NHMRC
Project Grant scheme, nor is it meant to be an alternative to Industry
Development schemes.
Eligibility: Please refer to website link below for more information.
Amount Awarded: The grant request will usually not exceed $200,000 per
annum, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Overheads: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney overhead
charges.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)- Innovative Grants
Introduction: JDRF supports highly innovative basic and clinical
research that is at the developmental stage by providing "seed" money
for investigative work based on sound scientific hypotheses for which
preliminary data are insufficient for a regular research grant but that
are likely to lead to important results for the treatment of diabetes
and its complications.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MD, DMD, DVM, PhD, or equivalent
and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university,
medical school, or other research facility.
Amount Awarded: These grants provide one year of support for a maximum
of US$100,000.
Overheads: This scheme is subject to a University of Sydney overhead
charge of up to 10%.

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA)- Incubator Grants (Seeding
Grants) 2007
Introduction: To broaden the scope of its support for research relevant
to multiple sclerosis, the MSRA wishes to promote research into
rehabilitative and other aspects of the disorder. In addition to
projects directly involving MS, it is understood that studies into other
disabling diseases, including both physical treatment and socioeconomic
aspects, may provide information applicable to MS. Such relevance to MS
needs to be stressed and all applications should be of a high standard.
Eligibility: Please refer to website link below for more information.
Amount Awarded: Applications are invited for small grants (up to $15,000
plus GST for one year only)
Overheads: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney overhead
charges.

Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE)- AINSE
Awards 2008
Introduction: The primary purpose of the AINSE Awards is to enable
university researchers to gain access to and train in the use of the ASF
facilities and expertise at Lucas Heights and elsewhere, and to meet
costs associated with the use of those facilities, including a
contribution towards the costs of travel to and from the facilities, and
accommodation during periods of attachment, when the university
researcher lives in a city different from that in which the facility is
located. AINSE Awards are generally small to enable AINSE to use its
funds to support as many applications of high scientific merit as
possible. AINSE Awards are often the valuable initial support, which
leads to additional external funding.
* Please contact Brendan Kennedy in Chemistry before submitting an
application: b.kennedy at chem.usyd.edu.au
<mailto:b.kennedy at chem.usyd.edu.au>
* The 7th September 2007 internal deadline is strict: hardcopies
must be completed.
Eligibility: The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering
(AINSE) Awards are to support projects undertaken by research staff and
students at its member universities.
Amount Awarded: Please refer to website link below for more information.
Overheads: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney overhead
