State Library of New South Wales- C.H Currey Memorial Fellowship and
Nancy Keesing Fellowship

The C. H. Currey Memorial Fellowship was established in 1974 by the
Library Council of New South Wales under the terms of the bequest of the
late Dr Charles Herbert Currey, a well-known Australian historian.  The
amount of the Fellowship for 2007 is $20,000.  The aim of the C.H.
Currey Memorial Fellowship is to promote the writing of Australian
history.

The Nancy Keesing Fellowship, honouring key Australian literary figure,
author and poet Nancy Keesing (1923-1993). The Fellowship aims to
promote the State Library of New South Wales as a centre of research
into Australian life and culture and to provide a readily accessible
record of the Fellowship project. This may be in the form of
bibliographical or collection analysis, or historical or creative
non-fiction.  The amount of the Fellowship for 2007 is $10,000.

United State Institute of Peace- Unsolicited Grant Initiative

 

Introduction: The Unsolicited Initiative is open to any project that
fits within USIP's general mandate of international conflict resolution.
USIP invites proposals for projects that will carry out basic and
applied research on the causes of war and other international conflicts;
on the ways in which conflicts have been or can be prevented, contained,
or terminated; and on the condition and character of peace among states
and peoples.  Unsolicited awards are offered across a broad range of
relevant disciplines, skills, and approaches. Topic areas of interest to
USIP include, but are not restricted to:

*      International conflict resolution 

*      Diplomacy 

*      Negotiation theory 

*      Functionalism and "track two" diplomacy 

*      Methods of third-party dispute settlement 

*      International law 

*      International organizations and collective security 

*      Deterrence and balance of power 

*      Arms control 

*      Psychological theories about international conflict 

*      The role of non-violence and non-violent sanctions 

*      Moral and ethical thought about conflict and conflict resolution 

*      Theories about relationships among political institutions, human
rights, and conflict 

Eligibility: Although USIP can provide grant support to individuals, it
prefers that an institutional affiliation be established.

Amount Awarded: Most awards fall in the range of US$25,000 to $55,000
and are for one to two years in duration.

NSW Office for Science & Medical Research (OSMR)- NSW Life Sciences
Research Awards 

 

Introduction: The NSW Life Sciences Research Awards provide
opportunities for outstanding life science research workers not
currently resident in New South Wales (NSW) to further their research
careers in NSW.  The Life Sciences Research Awards will use the same
model as the BioFirst Awards and have been realigned to support
priorities set out under New Directions for NSW - State Plan, as
follows:

*      S2 - Improved survival rates and quality of life for people with
potentially fatal or chronic disease;

*      P1 - Increased business investment in NSW;

*      E3 - Cleaner air and greenhouse gas management; and

*      E4 - Better outcomes for native vegetation, biodiversity, land,
rivers and coastal waterways.

Eligibility: Since a NSW Life Sciences Award is intended to attract a
research worker to NSW, it is not available to a research worker who is
already resident in NSW or employed by a NSW institution at the time of
application. 

Amount Awarded: $110,000 per year (incl GST) for four years.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)- Scholar Awards

 

Introduction: In an effort to expedite the progress toward a cure for
type 1 diabetes, the JDRF offers a Scholar Award. This award offers
sustained support for pioneering basic or clinical research aimed at
fulfilling the goals of JDRF finding a cure for type 1 diabetes or its
complications. The Scholar Award is designed to support individual
scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering research to
reach these goals. The Scholar Award will fund investigators with
extraordinary talent and vision, who are willing to take risks and
attempt new approaches to accelerate type 1 diabetes research.

Eligibility: Applications may be submitted by researchers who hold an
academic degree (DMD, DO, DVM, MD, PhD, or equivalent).    

Amount Awarded: Scholar Awards will each provide US$250,000 annually
including indirect costs, for up to five years.

The Sturge-Weber Foundation (SWF)- Research Program 

 

Introduction: The Sturge-Weber Foundation invites proposals for Young
Investigator Awards and Pilot Research Studies in the USA and abroad
that focus on projects related to the pathogenesis or treatment of
Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), Klippel-Trenaunay (KT) or Port Wine Stain
birthmarks. The Foundation strives to stimulate and support research in
some of these areas: studies of the gene expression of SWS,
angiogenesis, neurogenesis, insulin growth factors and more.  

1        Young Investigator Awards: up to US$30,000 per year for maximum
of two years in postdoctoral fellowship support (salary stipend and
conference allowance).  Applicants must be no more than four years out
of MD or PhD program and work under the supervision of an established
mentor.

2        Pilot Research Studies: up to US$30,000 per year for maximum of
two years for innovative studies with the potential for continued
support from federal or other agencies. These awards are available to
investigators at any stage in their career.

Proposals for a fellowship or research grant should be prefaced by a
letter of intent summarizing the proposed project and anticipated amount
of funding due by 1st September 2007 EST.

Cancer Research Institute- Postdoctoral Fellowship Program  

 

Introduction: The Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established to
answer the need for more researchers in the field of cancer immunology.
It supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and
research centres around the world who wish to receive training in cancer
immunology or general immunology.  As of January 2007, applications will
be accepted in electronic format ONLY. Paper applications will not be
accepted. The application process requires you to download a PDF
application form for institutional signature and certification.  

Eligibility: Applicants for the CRI Fellowship Program must have a PhD
by the date of award activation and must conduct their proposed research
under a sponsor who holds a formal appointment at the host institution.
There are no citizenship restrictions. 

Amount Awarded: Fellowship stipends are US$40,000 for the first year,
$42,000 for the second year, and $44,000 for the third year.

ANSTO- Radiation Technology for Australia Seminar: 10th October 2007 

The theme of the seminar will be "Radiation Technology for Australia".
We are interested in hearing about the current and future work of
researchers using gamma irradiation.  The purpose of the seminar is to
seek support for the case to construct a replacement research irradiator
at ANSTO with the intent of providing greater support to researchers in
Australia.  

The seminar will be split into two sessions:

1.	The Case of Gamma Irradiation - Current and Future Research
Needs

2.     Gamma Irradiation Workshop

Please respond to Justin Davies with an expression of interest and a
working title for your presentation.  So far interest from a number of
researchers has been in the areas of food irradiation, fruit flies,
human bones and tissues, forensics and security.

Department Education Science & Training- Australia-India Strategic
Research Fund (AISRF)

 

Introduction: The AISRF aims to facilitate and support Science and
Technology research cooperation between Australia and India. The fund
will assist Australian researchers to increase their participation in
leading edge scientific research with Indian scientists.  The objectives
of the AISRF are to:

*      Increase the uptake of leading edge science and technology (S&T)
through: 

o       Supporting collaboration and participation by Australian
researchers in strategically focussed, leading edge scientific research
and technology with Indian counterparts; and 

o       increased strategic alliances between Australian and Indian
researchers. 

*      Facilitate Australia's access to the global S&T system by
supporting bilateral relations with India. 

Eligibility: Australian scientists from both the public and private
sectors wishing to collaborate with international partners from
countries other than India are able to apply for funding.

Cotton Research & Development Corporation (CRDC)- Preliminary Research
Proposals 2008-09 

 

Introduction: The Cotton Research & Development Corporation invites
industry organisations, tertiary institutions, companies and research
agencies to submit Preliminary Research Proposals (PRPs) for R&D support
from CRDC in 2008-09.  Proposals that fit closely with identified
industry needs or have resulted from consultation with the industry are
more likely to be given priority.

 

*      On the website you must complete 'Step 1' and email to the CRDC
prior to submitting your application.  The CRDC requests that all
funding applications must now be submitted via the new web-based system,
'Clarity.'

The Sugar Research and Development Corporation (SRDC)- Research Projects


 

Introduction: The Sugar Research and Development Corporation (SRDC)
encourages researchers and members of Australia's sugarcane industry to
submit expressions of interest for research projects to commence, or be
undertaken, in 2008-09.  Expressions of interest are welcome for the
following Investment Arenas:

*      Regional Futures- to deliver profitable and sustainable regional
sugarcane industries using innovative value chain, farming, harvesting,
transport, milling and marketing systems adapted to local conditions

*      Emerging Technologies- to identify and apply relevant frontier
technologies to maintain the industry's competitive edge in the global
marketplace.

*      People Development- to enhance capacity for individuals and
networks to contribute to the future of the Australian sugar industry.

Eligibility: SRDC requires partnership projects involving industry,
researchers and/or community members.  The Corporation welcomes
proposals from new participants in sugar industry R&D.

Amount Awarded: $310,000 will be available for new Research projects in
2008-09 under the Emerging Technologies Arena; $260,000 is available for
new Research projects undertaken in 2008-09 under the People Development
Arena.

Department of Environment and Water Resources: Australian Centre for
Climate Change Adaptation- Proposal Invitations for a 'Climate Change
Adaptation Research Facility'.

 

Introduction: The purpose of the Climate Change Adaptation Research
Facility (the Facility) will be to lead the research community in a
national inter-disciplinary effort to generate the biophysical, social
and economic information needed by decision makers in government and in
vulnerable sectors and communities to manage the risks of climate change
impacts.  Proposals must have a focus on national objectives and the
capacity to deliver cross-sectoral benefits across the whole of
Australia.

Eligibility: Capacity to provide national research leadership and foster
collaboration among research institutions across Australia.

Amount Awarded: Australian Government funding of up to $50 million over
five years will be available to support the work of the Facility.
