Department of Communications, Information Technology & the Arts (DCITA)-
Telecommunications Consumer Representation Grants
Introduction: The objective of the Consumer Representation Grants is to
support adequate representation of consumers' interests in the
telecommunications environment by enabling consumers to have a voice in
the development of telecommunications policy and legislation. Funding
will be given to assist organisations in the representation of consumer
interests. These projects might include fostering community awareness
of telecommunications issues affecting consumers and facilitating
discussion of and research into telecommunications issues of interest to
consumers.

Amount Awarded: $700,000 is available for allocation in 2007-08.

Presentation- Claire T. Driscoll is the Director, Technology Transfer
Office of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National
Institutes of Health (NIH)
Claire will be visiting the University of Sydney on Monday 16th July
10:30am to 12:00pm midday in the ground floor auditorium in the SIT
building.

After spending 17 years at NIH in various capacities (in the lab as well
as in technology transfer positions with different institutes) Claire
has given various NIH tech transfer-focused talks with titles such as
"Technology Transfer Policies and Practice at the U.S. National
Institutes of Health," NIH as a Research Partner: Not so Secret Secrets
for Successfully Initiating, Negotiating and Entering into
Collaborations with NIH Scientists and Labs as well as a specialized
gene patent/genomic inventions-focused talk called "Genomic Inventions:
Patent Policy & Licensing Practice at the U.S. National Institutes of
Health".

National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC)- Research Development
Grants in Palliative Care
Introduction: The purpose of the Palliative Care Research Development
Grants is to provide opportunities for emerging investigators and
research teams to build capacity and foster the potential to develop
significant careers in palliative care research. They are also intended
to provide a building block on which future projects can be developed
and submitted to the NHMRC (or other organisation) for funding.
Applications for research ideas that are genuinely new are encouraged,
and research that focuses on the following areas will be of particular
interest:
* Palliative care in urban and rural Indigenous communities
* Rural health
* Caring for children with a life-limiting illnesses or condition
* Population based planning
* Bereavement in palliative care
* Optimum means of, or critical points for delivering palliative
interventions for people from Indigenous or Non-English speaking
backgrounds
* The impact of allied health services on palliative care

MBF Foundation- Grants: Expressions of Interest
Introduction: The MBF Foundation is calling for applications for
project funding through an open Expression of Interest (EOI) process.
The Foundation's objectives are to invest in projects promoting health
research (including research into health outcomes, health information,
health policy and health financing and ageing); health education; and
programs for leading healthy lives.
The Foundation's Key Themes for 2007:
* Keeping Health Care Affordable;
* Wellness and Obesity; and
* Healthy Ageing.
Each year, MBF Foundation uses a majority of its funding to proactively
seek out partnerships with other organisations. MBF Foundation
researches and investigates possible relationships, and actively works
at developing these partnerships with organisations that can deliver
community benefits in our areas of focus.

World Anti-Doping Agency- 2007 Scientific Research Topics
Introduction: The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) promotes and
coordinates, at the international level, the fight against doping in all
its forms. Through this independent agency, the Olympic Movement and the
Public Authorities have intensified their efforts to keep drugs out of
sport. The World Anti-Doping Agency's Health, Medical and Research
Committee has identified relevant areas of research in the field of
anti-doping and will encourage research projects covering the following
topics:
* Compounds and/or methods enhancing oxygen delivery
* Non-steroidal compounds or methods enhancing growth
* Projects relating to the Prohibited List: classic methodologies
* Projects relating to the Prohibited List: novel methodologies
* Identification and/or detection of substances with suspected
doping potential

Pfizer Australia- CardioVascular Lipid (CVL) Research Grants
Introduction: Applications are now sought for the 2007 CardioVascular
Lipid Research Grants (CVL) in some of the following areas:
* health outcomes
* epidemiology/compliance studies
* clinical studies in women and the elderly
* hypertension/lipid disorders
* coronary disease, arrhythmias
* unstable angina
* myocardial infarction
* cerebrovascular disease and stroke
* diabetic dyslipidaemias
* obesity and lipid disorders
* familial dyslipidaemias
The CVL Research Grants were established in 1999 to support clinical
research into cardiovascular disease or related therapeutic areas. The
program has been designed to promote excellence in medical research
throughout Australia. It will help develop the best of our young
clinical researchers and extend their already notable contribution to
medicine and the health of our community.
Eligibility: The principal applicant must be a citizen or permanent
resident of Australia.
Amount Awarded: Funding for CVL Research Grants will be up to AU$55,000
(including GST). Each grant is for 12 months.

infrastructure charges.

The Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA)- Research Grants
2008
Introduction: ORIA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting
research into the nature and cause of eye disease and the prevention of
blindness. The ORIA research committee encourages projects which have
clearly defined aims that can be achieved in the one or two years of
funding. The committee encourages pilot projects that will produce data
to enable subsequent submission to other bodies for larger grants.
Corneal Disease and External Disease, Glaucoma, Lens and Cataract, Low
Vision and Blindness Rehabilitation are some of the areas targeted by
ORIA's National Research Strategy.
Eligibility: Grants will be available to ophthalmologists, trainee
ophthalmologists or for work being done in University Departments of
Ophthalmology.
Amount Awarded: Individual grants up to $50,000 for one year; or up to
$70,000 for two years.
Overheads: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney overhead and
infrastructure charges.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation- Ipac Securities Travel Grant
Program
Introduction: The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) invites
applications for Travel Grant Awards:
Young Scientist
JDRF invites applications from young researchers for grants of up to
$2,500 to allow travel to research institutions or scientific meetings,
for the purpose of furthering the researcher's expertise in the study of
type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. Researchers must be in the early stage of
their career (e.g. PhD students or not more than 5 years post-doctoral)
and be Australian citizens or permanent residents currently residing in
Australia.
Allied Health & Nursing
JDRF invites applications from young allied health professionals for
grants of up to $2,000 to allow travel for the purpose of presenting
their research relevant to type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. Applicants must
be allied health or nurse professionals undertaking work/ research
impacting on the lives of people with Type 1 diabetes and their carers
and families, and be Australian citizens or permanent residents
currently residing in Australia.

The Rolex Awards for Enterprise- Rolex Awards 2008
The Rolex Awards are an opportunity for exceptional international
recognition of Australians making great achievements on behalf of
humanity in a wide range of scientific, cultural and environmental
fields.
The Awards, worth US$100,000 each, are presented every two years in five
areas:
* Science and Medicine
* Technology and Innovation
* Exploration and Discovery
* The Environment and
* Cultural Heritage
However projects may be submitted in almost any field, provided it
contributes to the betterment of humankind. Anyone of any age or

Department of Education Science & Training (DEST)- Sir Mark Oliphant
Conferences: International Frontiers of Science and Technology
The objective of the scheme is to support the goal of the Government's
International Science Linkages Programme established under the
Australian Government by providing financial support to stage
strategically significant international conferences in Australia on high
priority, cutting edge, multi-disciplinary themes.
The Conference Series is managed on behalf of DEST by the Australian
Academy of Science (AAS) and the Australian Academy of Technological
Sciences and Engineering (ATSE). The Conference Management Group
consists of representatives of these organisations. AAS and ATSE will
each mount one conference a year. Each conference can be supported to an
amount of up to $90,000.

NSW Department of Primary Industries: Fisheries- NSW FRAB Process for
the 2008/09 round of Fisheries Research and Development Corporation
(FRDC) funding
Introduction: The NSW FRAB has determined 7 main priority areas of
research for the 2008/09 round of FRDC funding:
* Develop and test cost-effective and safe technologies for
on-board monitoring of fisheries.
* Developing robust methods for assessing ecology and biodiversity
in interpreting impacts on fisheries and their habitats.
* Impacts of predicted sea-level rise on sustainability and
productivity of coastal fish habitats.
* Development of a strategic research plan for the post harvest
sector.
* Improving profitability in aquaculture:
o improve health management strategies;
o assess non-lethal methods of excluding predators from
aquaculture activities.
* Food resources, disease resistance and commercial handling of
oysters.
* Projects that address indigenous and recreational fishing issues.

National Geographic Society- Research & Exploration Grants
Introduction: The National Geographic Society awards grants for
scientific field research and exploration through its Committee for
Research and Exploration. All proposed projects must have both a
geographical dimension and relevance to other scientific fields and be
of broad scientific interest.
Applications are generally limited to the following disciplines:
anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, biology, botany, geography,
geology, oceanography, paleontology, and zoology.
Funding is not restricted to United States citizens. Researchers
planning work in foreign countries should include at least one local
collaborator as part of their research teams.
Eligibility: Applicants are expected to have advanced degrees (PhD or
equivalent) and be associated with an educational organization or
institution).
Amount Awarded: While grant amounts vary greatly, most range from
US$15,000 to $20,000.
Overheads: This scheme is exempt from University of Sydney overhead and
infrastructure charges.
