CSIRO Light Metals Flagship Project - Call for Proposals - Research
support into the Heat Treatment of High Pressure Die Castings

Introduction to Funding Opportunity: Recent work within the Light
Metals Flagship has identified non-intuitive processing conditions by
which high pressure die casting may be successfully heat treated without
blistering or distortion, often with more than a 100% resultant increase
to the tensile properties. Such improvements enable a significant
vehicle weight reduction through component re-design.

Amount awarded: Funding available for these types of projects is
normally around the $100,000 mark.
Overheads: CSIRO will pay indirect costs in accordance with AVCC
multipliers For more information see:

of our annual expenditures are devoted to the direct clinical testing of
new treatments. Twenty-five percent is earmarked for research on the
causes of these illnesses.

Eligibility: Anyone. We have supported researchers at all stages of
development and from diverse fields of study. Approximately one-third of
our applications come from countries other than the United States.

The Hermon Slade Foundation - Research Grants

Introduction to Funding Opportunity: Believing that "...if there is a
way better than another, it is the way of nature", Mr Hermon Slade has
sought to encourage the pursuit of excellence in scientific research,
particularly on topics which are designed to improve the ways in which
individuals and communities interact with their natural environments.

The Foundation seeks to complement, rather than compete with, other
funding bodies. Experience has shown that modest support can be
particularly effective if used as "seed money" to initiate projects,
which may subsequently expand and attract major funding from other
sources. Foundation grants have also supported specific components of
large projects financed primarily by other agencies.

Eligibility: Grants are awarded to Australian institutions for
activities within Australia. Occasionally activities located in
countries of the south west Pacific may also be funded.

Amount awarded: Typically, the Hermon Slade Foundation provides project
grants up to approximately $30,000 per year for up to three years.

Its primary object is to "...advance and enhance the progress and
harmony of mankind with the Earth through the study and application of
Natural Sciences".

Overheads: This scheme is exempt from the University of Sydney overheads

The Australia and Pacific Science Foundation - Research Grants

Introduction to Funding Opportunity: In 2000, the Australia and Pacific
Science Foundation was established to sponsor activities within
Australia and managed by Australian entities. In 2005 sponsorship was
extended to include projects with components within the south west
Pacific, managed by Australian institutions or other entities within
those countries. The Research Committee
<http://www.apscience.org.au/committee.html> particularly favours
activities that seem likely to lead to improved systems of managing
land, water, plants and animals in ways which will enhance the
productivity and quality of food, fisheries, plants and forests, while
simultaneously conserving the natural environment, preserving
biodiversity, avoiding pollution of soils and water, and enhancing human
health and welfare.

Amount awarded: Typically the APSF provides project grants up to
approximately A$15,000 per year for up to three years.
Overheads: This scheme is exempt from the University of Sydney overheads
