This email is specifically for Researchers who are currently in the
process of completing the NHMRC Notification of Intent.
Dear Researchers,
The following guidelines have been prepared by the Research Office (RO)
and the Director, Project Development to assist you in completing the
NOTIFICATION OF INTENT for the NHMRC Project scheme.
1.3 - Scientific Title
Where possible ensure the title of your project reflects the area of
research and the type of research to be undertaken. (e.g an RCT in
childhood asthma)
There has been some confusion about the URL links for Section 4.3 and
4.4 of the Notification of Intent form. The NHMRC has confirmed that
the following links are indeed correct:
4.3 - Health Keywords/Phrases describing the field of research
This section relates to "Keywords/phrases that specifically describe the
most relevant area for the research being conducted in the application".
Please use the link
http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/_files/keyword1.pdf to complete
this section.
4.4 - Research Keywords/Phrases - Health Issues/Disease/Clinical
Condition relevant to this research
This section relation to "Keywords/phrases that specifically describe
the Research within the Area you selected in 4.3". Please use the link
http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/_files/keyword2.pdf to complete
this section.
4.5 Research Plan
This section requires a brief outline of the research plan in no more
than 5000 characters including spaces. Below is a suggested guide as to
how to complete this section.
Aims (1000 characters)
In about 1000 characters use this section to describe the aims of your
project (maximum of three aims) and include one hypothesis if relevant.
Background (1500 characters)
Describe the background of your proposal taking into consideration the
minimum information that is required for the panel to understand your
research proposal.
Research Plan (1500 characters)
When completing this section consider whether your proposal involves any
unique and/or innovative methodology and techniques that would require
specialized expertise or if it is of cross-disciplinary research. If so
highlight this information in your research plan. This would assist the
NHMRC with their selection of panel members.
Significance (500 characters)
This section should describe clearly the impact of your proposed
research proposal. Consider the following issues when completing this
section:
a) Whether your research outcomes will impact more than the
end-user (e.g. patient) and a specific field of research. Will your
outcomes also have an impact on other fields of research and lead to a
wider application of those outcomes?
b) What new clinical/medical knowledge is being created? If so
what is it and who will be interested in it?
c) "NOW" factor - why does your project need to be funded now (and
not next year)? Highlight any urgency, worsening problem or window of
opportunity, etc. Mention the National Research and Health Priorities if
your research targets a specific health research initiative (e.g. avian
flu, etc) but don't waste space just repeating them in the NOI.
Outcomes (500 characters)
Include short-term and longer-term research and health outcomes. How
will you translate your research outcomes? What further research will
follow?
