full-time at the University for the duration of the Fellowship.
Applicants seeking to join the University from another organisation in
Australia or from overseas are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applicants currently employed at the University of Sydney who commenced

2 NHMRC Development Grants 2005 for 2006 - Call for Applications
The NHMRC Development Grants Scheme aims to:
1. Support the development of health or medical research that has
commercial potential and which has the potential to benefit the
Australian community.
2. Provide funding for research commercialisation at the early
proof-of-concept stage.
The scheme is pitched at the perceived funding gap between the end of a
high quality basic research program and the developments required to
make the project commercially attractive to potential investors. The
scheme is not intended to be an alternative to the NHMRC Project Grant
scheme, nor is it meant to be an alternative to Industry Development
schemes.
Revised documents relevant to the submission of applications and the
peer review processes for Development Grant funding to commence in
September 2005 are available at:
http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/research/develop.htm
Note changes to Policy:
External Assessments of applications will not be provided.
The Development Grant Review Panel will provide the applicant a written
report, detailing concerns identified with the application and posing
any additional questions. The applicants will have an opportunity to
provide a response, which will form part of the panel's review of the
application.
Please contact Kathleen Howard in the Research Office for an ID and any
assistance (9351 3393 or kathleen.howard at usyd.edu.au). The internal
closing date: Friday, 15 July 2005.

4 NSW Young Tall Poppy Science Awards 2005 - Call for Nominations
The University of Sydney has been invited to provide one or more
nominations from its academic staff for the 2005 NSW Young Tall Poppy
Science Awards.
The Tall Poppy Campaign was established by the Australian Institute of
Political Science in 1998 to promote Australia's intellectual
achievements to the attention of the Australian community. The Campaign
is supported by the Commonwealth and State Governments and the corporate
sector. An important component of the Tall Poppy Campaign is the "Young
Tall Poppy Science Awards" which recognise the achievements of
outstanding younger researchers. These Awards were inaugurated in 1999,
and are made on a state-by-state basis annually or bi-annually
throughout Australia. To date, the Awards have been made to
high-achieving researchers from diverse areas of science, engineering
and medicine in Victoria, South Australia , Queensland, NSW and the ACT.
In October 2005 we will make Young Tall Poppy Science Awards in New
South Wales, and are seeking nominations from all physical, biological,
biomedical and health sciences. The Call for Nominations information
(Selection criteria and nomination form) is attached and is also
available on our website (www.tallpoppies.net.au)
Nominations for the NSW Young Tall Poppy Science Awards should be
received no later than Friday 19 August 2005. The winners will be
announced during Science Exposed (an initiative of the NSW Ministry for
Science and Medical Research) 20 - 21 October at Parliament House,
Sydney.
