RESEARCH GRANTS

1	Multiple Sclerosis Australia (MSA) - Project Grants

The award of project grants is MSA's main avenue for the support of
research relevant to multiple sclerosis in universities, hospitals or
other recognised research institutions. Since these awards will normally
be made for a period of two years only, the purpose is primarily to
assist investigations in which considerable progress can be expected
over this or a shorter period.

2	Multiple Sclerosis Australia - Small and Seeding Grants

Applications are invited for small grants and seeding grants to 'seed'
the earliest stages of new research efforts. E.g. the application may be
for funding of a pilot study to be carried out before the project grant
application is submitted .The application must meet the normal criteria
for MS relevance, innovation, feasibility and merit. This scheme is
exempt from the University of Sydney Overheads charge. For more

- Spinal Cord Injury & Related Neurological Conditions Research Program
Grants

The New South Wales Government's Spinal Cord Injury & Related
Neurological Conditions Research Grants Program, launched by the New
South Wales Premier, the Hon Bob Carr MP, in January 2003, is intended
to promote research into spinal cord injury and related neurological
conditions. Funding for the Program Grant must be substantially expended
within NSW.

4	NSW Ministry for Science and Medical Research - Spinal Cord
Injury & Related Neurological Conditions Research Project Grants

The Spinal Cord Injury and Related Neurological Conditions Research
Grant Program is intended to promote research into spinal cord injury
and related neurological conditions. The key objectives of the Program
are:

1.	To establish a critical mass of relevant research to spinal cord
injury and related neurological conditions in NSW;
2.	To develop, attract or retain relevant research talent to NSW;
and
3.	To make significant scientific discoveries that have a positive
impact on the lives of those with spinal cord injuries and neurological
conditions in NSW.

scientific/medical research relevant to causes, treatments, prevention
and cure of retinitis pigmentosa and other inherited and age-related
retinal dystrophies. Applications will be assessed in accordance with
the following procedures and policy and any grant offered will be

7	Hereditary Disease Foundation (HDF) - Research Grants (Letter of
Intent)

The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's
disease. Support will be for research projects that will contribute to
identifying and understanding the basic defect in Huntington's disease.
Areas of interest include trinucleotide expansions, animal models, gene
therapy, neurobiology and development of the basal ganglia, cell
survival and death, and intercellular signaling in striatal neurons. The
maximum award for research grants is US$50,000.
