NEWS
1. Australian Research Council (ARC) - Thinking Systems
The Australian Research Council (ARC) - and the National Health and
Medical Research Council (NHMRC) are collaborating to progress the
Australian Government's goals for Breakthrough Science and Frontier
Technologies under the National Research Priority Frontier Technologies
for Building and Transforming Australian Industries. As part of their
strategy for achieving this, the ARC and NHMRC have established a joint
Working Group to explore opportunities for new and cutting edge research
in the area of Thinking Systems.
The Working Group is considering options for conduct of research at the
intersection of neuroscience, genetics, proteomics and information
technology that will increase understanding of the biological hardware,
programming and operation of thinking systems. It is intended that this
interdisciplinary collaborative and cross-institutional initiative will
lead to the generation and application of new knowledge in the
development of intelligent machines, robots and information systems and
will place Australia at the forefront of this area internationally.
Prior to recommending any funding scheme, the Working Group is seeking
broad stakeholder input to identify how strategic and innovative
multidisciplinary research could male a significant contribution to this
area. Researchers and other who have an interest in this area are
encouraged to provide input.
Submissions should balance the need for providing as much relevant
information as possible with the need to be concise, and should include
contact details.
Please forward your submission to:

2. FEAST- Marie Curie Seminar Series - 9-16 November 2004
You are invited to a free seminar on the opportunities provided by the
Marie Curie Actions and presented by Mr Nicholas Newman.
The Marie Curie Actions are the EU's human resources and mobility
initiatives, and give researchers at all stages in their career an
opportunity to work with their overseas colleagues. Many of these
Actions are now open to researchers across the world, including from
Australia. These seminars are an ideal introduction for those
considering or interested in a Marie Curie Fellowship.
The seminars will provide practical information for individuals and
institutions seeking to participate in this programme.
For information on the Marie Curie actions, see
http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions/index_en.html.
For technical documents and information on the calls for proposals
related to Marie Curie Actions, see
http://www.cordis.lu/fp6/mobility.htm
Seminars will be held at 7 venues, with a video link from 1 to 2 other
venues. Please visit the website at www.feast.org/register.php for
further information and to find the venue most convenient for you.

4. Ataxia-Telangiectasia Children's Project - Basic Research Grants
The A-T Children's Project provides competitive grant awards for basic
and translational research grants related to ataxia-telangiectasia. One-
and two-year projects are funded up to a maximum total direct cost of
$75,000 per year. Grants of $75,000 per year, however, are rare; grants
