NEWS

1. Reminder - Community Research and Development Information Service
(CORDIS)
Mr Declan Kirrane is the architect of CORDIS and will be in Australia from
16-24 August for a series of information seminars aimed at academic and
industry researchers, research agencies, research managers, and technology
transfer agencies.

The CORDIS website (Community Research and Development Information Service)
www.cordis.lu provides a unique overview of research and technological
development in Europe and offers opportunities for Australian academic and
industry researchers to develop their relationships with Europe.

Seminars will be held in Sydney on Tuesday 17 August, 2 venues, morning and
afternoon sessions. Registration details and further information can be
found at: www.feast.org/register.php.

For more information please visit July News section:
http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/reschols/news.htm

2. Cancellation: Heart Foundation Research Funding Information Session
Regretfully due to unforeseen circumstances, the planned information
session scheduled by the National Heart Foundation of Australia for Monday
2 August 2004 at the University of Sydney has been cancelled until further
notice.

The Research Office regrets any inconvenience caused.

3. Research Training and Postgraduate Research Scholarships Forum
The Dean of Graduate Studies and the Research Office will be conducting a
forum to inform the wider University community regarding the DEST Research
Training Scheme as well as postgraduate research scholarship policies and
opportunities within the University. In addition to providing relevant
information, the forum aims to initiate discussion and suggestions for
promoting research training within the University and recruiting and
retaining high calibre postgraduate research students.

For more information please visit July News section:
http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/reschols/news.htm

4. Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) - Call for Articles:
October Issue of Synergy
The Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) invites contributions from
members of the university community interested in writing a short article
for Synergy - the University's publication designed to support critical and
scholarly discussion of higher education teaching and learning. Synergy
welcomes scholarly and research-based contributions for its October 2004 issue.

For more information please visit July News section:
http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/reschols/news.htm

5. University of Sydney Veterinary Science Foundation and the Animal
Welfare League - The Delta Society Bob Kibble Memorial Lecture
Professor Frank Ascione, Professor in the Department of Psychology and
adjunct Professor of Family and Human Development at Utah State University,
will be speaking next week about his recent research into the common roots
of violence towards people and animals and how it can be used as an early
indicator of at-risk status in children. His work presents links between
violence, children and young people's attitudes to animals, and has
significant ramifications for veterinarians, health professionals, social
workers, and law enforcement agencies.
