NEWS

1.      RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SCHEME 2004 FOR 2005 FUNDING
The guidelines and application form for The University of Sydney Research 
and Development Grants Scheme are now on the web at: 
http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/reschols/forms/forms.htm.

Applicants should note that the former Sesqui New Staff Support Scheme and 
the Sesqui Research and Development Scheme are now replaced with The 
University of Sydney Research & Development (R&D) Scheme.

A new component of the scheme in 2005 is a specific funding allocation 
(separate from other R&D project applications) to support applications from 
Early Career Researchers.

The closing date for the scheme is 20 August 2004.

2.      AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY (AIC) - INTERNATIONAL 
CONNECTIONS CONFERENCE

This two-day conference will examine existing and emerging forms of 
criminality, the impact on Australia, and the links to transnational crime, 
as well as policy and practitioner responses.

The conference program will consist of invited international and local 
speakers and selected papers from interested persons in concurrent sessions.

3.      UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP SCHEME 2005
The University of Sydney Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme 2005
The guidelines, application form and other associated material for The 
University of Sydney Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme 2005 are now

4.      GENE AND RELATED THERAPIES RESEARCH ADVISORY PANEL (GTRAP)
This two-day conference will examine existing and emerging forms of 
criminality, the impact on Australia, and the links to transnational crime, 
as well as policy and practitioner responses.

On Wednesday 4 August 2004 in Sydney, GTRAP will be conducting a workshop 
on regulatory issues related to the conduct of human gene therapy clinical 
trials. Researchers, clinicians, HREC members and other interested parties 
are invited to attend. The venue is still to be determined, but will take 
place on campus at The University of Sydney.

RESEARCH GRANTS

5.      SUDDEN INFANT DEATH RESEARCH FOUNDATION (SIDRF) - RESEARCH GRANTS
The Sudden Infant Death Research Foundation (SIDRF) is calling for 
applications for research support (which might include granting of Research 
Fellowships) in the field of sudden death in infancy. SIDRF will be 
adopting a two-stage selection process for awarding research funding. Stage 
one requires applicants to submit a short one or two page outline of their 
intended proposal including hypothesis, methodology, outcome measures, and 
availability of resource material, statistical procedures and estimate of 
yearly funding.

6.      THE GLAUCOMA FOUNDATION (TGF) - GRANTS-IN-AID
The Glaucoma Foundation offers grants to doctors and scientists striving to 
improve the lives of glaucoma patients through research. Grant applications 
are accepted semi-annually.  Initial grant funding for a one-year period is 
for up to $35,000; a grantee is permitted to apply for a grant renewal of 
up to $50,000. A renewal grant is a one-year grant that is based upon

7.      MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE RESEARCH INSTITUTE (MNDRI) - GRANTS-IN-AID
The Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia supports research 
projects, which might improve our understanding of the causes and cures of 
Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Researchers are invited to apply for 
grants-in-aid to support research. Funding will normally be for one year 
only. In recent years, grants have ranged from $15,000 to $34,000, with an

8.      LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION NSW (LFNSW) - RESEARCH GRANTS
Applicants are encouraged to develop innovative approaches to 
haematological problems, especially in the areas of basic or fundamental 
research.  Applications will be considered for support for specific 
projects, for any of the following: Salaries for research workers and 
maintenance costs for research projects. Funding of up to $90,000 per annum 
will be awarded to successful applicants.

9.      LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION NSW (LFNSW) - RESEARCH EQUIPMENT GRANTS
The Leukaemia Foundation of NSW invites applications for funding of items 
of research equipment for basic and applied research into leukaemia and 
related blood diseases.

10.     MERCY FOUNDATION - MAJOR GRANTS
The Mercy Foundation provides practical support for people who are working 
together for the elimination of poverty and the creation of a more just 
social order. Priority is given to groups that have difficulty attracting 
funding from other sources and are made up of or include people who are 
experiencing poverty or injustice. The Foundation is ready to support 
initiatives that are new or untried. Applications must be made by a 
community group or organisation (not individuals). The range for Grants is 
normally $5,000 - $15,000.

11.     WORLD CANCER RESEARCH FUND (WCRF) - RESEARCH GRANTS
World Cancer Research Fund is now inviting applications for grants to fund 
research into the effects of food and nutrition on the origins, causes and 
prevention of cancer. Grants will be for a maximum of £150,000 over four

12.     ASIA-PACIFIC NETWORK FOR GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH (APN) - CALL FOR 
PROPOSALS 2004
The APN is able to provide financial support for research and workshop 
activities that fall within its areas of interest (please refer to website 
below). The average grant awarded for 2003 projects was approximately 
US$45,000. It is possible to request partial support for a larger project. 
The total budget the APN sets aside for its annual Call for Proposals is

13.     AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (AINSE) - 
AINSE AWARDS 2005
Applications are invited from university researchers in the fields, or 
applications, of nuclear science and associated technology. A research 
project of interest to the Institute will usually require some use of the 
national facilities at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories near Sydney, 
NSW. AINSE also facilitates access to the National Plasma Fusion Research 
Facility. Collaborative research programs are particularly encouraged in 
fields, which are related to the research activities of the Australian 
Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas Heights. 
Assistance is available mainly in the form of awards enabling university 
researchers to meet costs associated with the use of facilities; travel to 
and from those facilities; and accommodation during periods of attachment.

14.     PKD FOUNDATION - RESEARCH GRANTS
Applicants are invited to apply the PKD Foundation's Research Grants. 
Funding priority is given to (1) Proposals addressing promising new areas 
of study that may serve as the first step in obtaining long term funding 
from other major granting agencies. (2) Studies that will directly impact 
the understanding of the mechanisms of the disease and/or the clinical care 
of individuals with PKD. A one-year grant of up to US$65,000 or two-year

FELLOWSHIPS AND AWARDS

15.     PKD FOUNDATION - FELLOWSHIPS
A two-year grant of up to $50,000 per year, with the possibility of 
additional funding for a third year, pending a rigorous and competitive 
scientific review and availability of funds, is available. The principal 
investigator in the research fellow's laboratory is allowed the discretion 
to equalize the salary of the award to coincide with other research fellows

16.     PAUL J. GETTY TRUST - CURATORIAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
The fellowships are reserved for full-time curators of all nationalities 
who have a minimum of three years professional experience and who are 
employed at museums with art collections. Fellowships support either 
independent research or museum-related projects, such as exhibitions or

17.     AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE (AAS) - DOROTHY HILL AWARD 2005
The award supports research in the Earth sciences including reef science, 
ocean drilling, marine science and taxonomy in marine systems, by female 
researchers under 40 years at the closing date, except in the case of

19.     SOCIETY OF NUCLEAR MEDICINE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION 
(SNERF) - POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS
The fellowship will be awarded to recent doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ph.D. 
plus M.D.) recipients demonstrating excellent academic record and 
exceptional research ability. Its purpose is to broaden recipients' basic 
exposure to nuclear medicine research at an institution different from that 
conferring the doctoral degree. The award, amounting to US$25,000 per year, 
is for two years, contingent upon satisfactory performance the first year.

21.     NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC SCIENCE (NIFS) - MICHAEL DUFFY 
TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP
The funding available for each Travel Fellowship is $8,500. This includes 
funding to travel to the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science 
Society Symposium (ANZFSS) to present a paper on the outcomes of the 
Fellowship. The Travel Fellowship is for a maximum duration of four weeks
