NEWS

University of Sydney Biosafety Announcement
All projects involving the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) 
and/or recombinant DNA techniques must be approved by the University of 
Sydney Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) prior to any research 
commencing. This is a legislative requirement.
Researchers wishing to commence new projects involving GMOs or recombinant 
DNA techniques in January 2004 must submit an application to the IBC no 
later than Friday 21st November 2003. For more information, go to November

ARC Expert Advisory Committee: 2004 Call for Nominations
The ARC has called for nominations to serve on its Expert Advisory 
Committees (EACs).
The nomination form must be completed and submitted electronically to the 
ARC by Friday 14 November 2003. In addition, two paper copies of the 
Nomination Form AND the University's own ARC EAC Nomination Endorsement 
Form must be lodged with the University of Sydney Research Office by 5pm

ARC Linkage International Application Form Update
The ARC intends to remove the Linkage International application form for 
fellowships commencing in 2004 and awards submitted in 2003 from GAMS on 28 
November 2003. It anticipates publishing funding rules for fellowships 
commencing in 2005 and awards submitted in 2004 in December, with a new 
application forms available late January/ early February 2004. For more

New South Wales Premier Literary Awards
In 1979 the New South Wales Government inaugurated the annual literary 
awards to honour distinguished achievement by Australian writers. In 2004 
the Premier's Literary Awards, with a total prize pool of $157,000, are the 
most generous and comprehensive literary awards of their kind in Australia.

RESEARCH GRANTS

Asthma Foundation of NSW  Asthma Research Funding Program
The Asthma Foundation of NSW is pleased to announce that it will be seeking 
to award a minimum of three asthma research projects of $50,000 each in 
2004.  The projects must involve research that improves understanding, 
prevention or treatment of asthma.  The awards will be made to projects 
which were submitted to the National Health & Medical Research Council in 
2003 and which achieved a high score but were not funded for 2004. For more

Breast Cancer Research Association (BCRA)  Research Grants
Breast Cancer Research Association (BCRA) Inc. as trustee for the Breast 
Cancer Research Trust exists to provide funding for scientific and medical 
research into the causes, prevention and cure of breast cancer. The work to 
be funded must relate either to the causes, prevention, diagnosis, or 
treatment of breast cancer. Grants are offered each year to support 
research over a period of 1-3 years. For more information see:

Australia and Pacific Science Foundation (APSF)  Research Grants
Grants are made in six-monthly instalments, and payments are dependent upon 
the receipt of satisfactory, six-monthly reports and annual financial 
statements. The Research Committee particularly favours activities that 
seem likely to lead to improved systems of managing land, water, plants and 
animals in ways which will enhance the productivity and quality of food, 
fisheries, plants and forests, while simultaneously conserving the natural 
environment, preserving biodiversity, avoiding pollution of soils and 
water, and enhancing human health and welfare.

Association of University Programs in Health Administration  Health 
Services Research Prize
The Health Services Research Prize acknowledges national or international 
contributions of health services research, defined as a product of the 
application of analytic methods to the organization, financing, and/or 
delivery of health services. An individual's specific contribution or a 
career-long achievement may be recognized. The focus of the Prize is the 
recognition of a person who has made significant and demonstrable

Ambulatory Paediatric Association  International Health Award
The APA is an international organization of paediatricians and other health 
professionals, which seeks to promote research, teaching, and improved 
health care in the area of general paediatrics. We invite child health 
professionals from around the world to submit abstracts describing their 
research in the areas of primary care paediatrics, the clinical aspects of 
common child health problems, child health services research and research

Australian Academy of Science  Japan Society for the Promotion of Science 
Fellowship Program for Research in Japan
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) offers fellowships 
worldwide for scientists to do research at designated research institutions 
and laboratories for periods of either 14 to 60 days for the Short-Term 
program or 2 to 10 months for the Long-Term program. Successful applicants 
will receive from JSPS an economy class airfare from Australia to the 
international airport closest to the host institute in Japan and allowances 
for living and travelling in Japan. For more information see:
