Forthcoming NHMRC & ARC Workshops at USyd

NHMRC Research Funding Workshop - 13 November 2003

Eastern Avenue Lecture Theatre
10.30-12.30

Representatives from the NHMRC will provide researchers, and those 
interested in research, with advice regarding the NHMRC and its research 
funding schemes, including information regarding the peer review process 
for NHMRC Project Grant applications and advice on writing a grant 
application from an experienced researcher. There will also be time for 
questions and interaction.

NHMRC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research Workshop

Eastern Avenue Lecture Theatre

Representatives from the NHMRC will provide advice to researchers, and 
potential researchers, on how to appropriately meet the Criteria for Health 
and Medical Research of Indigenous Australians. Topics will include:

* Introduction to the NHMRC, including the role of the newly established 
NHMRC Committees responsible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 
health research
* Current NHMRC funding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health 
research
* Priorities identified in the NHMRC Roadmap and priorities relevant to the 
local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
* Description of the peer review process for Project Grant applications 
with a primary focus on the role of the Indigenous Health Research Panel
* Overview of the Criteria for Health and Medical Research of Indigenous 
Australians
* Other opportunities for NHMRC research funding of Aboriginal and Torres 
Strait Islander health issues

NHMRC Application Workshop - 3 December 2003

with Drinks and Nibbles afterwards

All researchers associated with the University of Sydney are invited to 
participate in an afternoon workshop on strategic issues for applicants for 
NHMRC Project, Program, People support schemes in the 2004 round of 
applications.  Introduction  from Prof. David Burke, Dean Research and 
Development (CHS) and Prof. Tim Hirst, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development 
and Innovation).  Speakers include Prof. Judy Black, Chair of NHMRC 
Research Committee and Prof. Carol Armour, NHMRC Research Training Schemes, 
Prof. Phillip Robinson, NHMRC Fellowship Schemes, Professor Graeme Stewart, 
NHMRC Program Grants Scheme and A/Prof Mark Onslow, NHMRC Project Grants 
Schemes.

An open forum Q&A will follow the presentations. Speakers and a panel of 
researchers with successful track records in securing NHMRC grants and 
experience on Grant Review Panels in 2002 and 2003 will be available to 
share their expertise. The final Q&A will be followed by breakout sessions 
where the speakers and panel members will be available for 
consultation.  They'll also be available for informal interactions over 
drinks and nibbles afterwards.

ARC 'Report-back' Workshop - 4 December 2003

1.30-3.00: Open Forum for Researchers

Representatives from the ARC will report on the recently completed grant 
round and advise on likely changes in 2004. The ARC is interested in 
receiving feedback from researchers and research managers to improve 
processes, funding rules and instructions to applicants.

In attendance from the ARC: Dr Stephen Walker (Executive Director, 
Engineering and Environmental Science), Prof Alan Johnson (Executive 
Director, Biological Science and Biotechnology) and Prof Ian Petersen 
(Executive Director, Mathematics, Information and Communications).
