NEWS
FORUM FOR EUROPEAN-AUSTRALIAN S&T (FEAST) 4 - NETWORKING FOR EXCELLENCE
FEAST is holding a conference on 17 18 June 2003 to promote scientific
interchange and policy discussion between Australia and Europe at the Shine
Dome in Canberra ACT. Conference aims are to increase awareness of the
state-of-play in research in Australia and Europe, facilitate joint
research projects, and provide commentary on the status of
Australia-European research collaboration.

2003 TYLER PRIZE MEDALLION
The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement is the premier award for
environmental science, energy and medicine conferring great benefit upon
mankind. Tyler Laureates receive a $200,000 annual prize and are presented
a gold medallion at ceremonies in Los Angeles.

RESEARCH GRANTS
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AUTHORITY (NSW) - ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST GRANTS -
ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH
NSW Environmental Trust is offering Research Grants to individual research
projects. Grants of up to $250,000 for projects of 1-3 year's duration for
research in waters and catchments, atmosphere, environmental noise, social
issues affecting the environment and/or sustainability disciplines (total
program $1 million).

DIABETES AUSTRALIA RESEARCH TRUST (DART) GRANTS PROGRAM
DART is calling for applications in the following categories: 1) 2004
Millennium Diabetes Research Grant - This award of up to $150,000 can be
taken over one or two years and 2) One-Year DART Grants - More than 20 DART
grants of up to $40,000 will be awarded to the highest ranked applications
received.

CROHN'S & COLITIS FOUNDATION OF AMERICA SENIOR RESEARCH AWARD
The CCFA provides funds to stimulate and encourage innovative research in
the basic biomedical and clinical sciences, which is likely to increase the
understanding of the etiology, pathogenesis, therapy, and prevention of
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Maximum award is US$100,000 per
year for up two years.

AUSTRALIAN KIDNEY FOUNDATION - MEDICAL RESEARCH EQUIPMENT GRANTS
The Foundation provides grants of up to $15,000 for the purchase of
equipment to be used in for research into the causes, prevention and
treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract. A research group
can only apply for one equipment item each year.

AUSTRALIAN KIDNEY FOUNDATION - MEDICAL RESEARCH PROJECT GRANTS
The Foundation provides project grants of up to $75,000 pa for up to 3
years for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders
of the kidneys and urinary tract. The grants will be available to
investigators who have submitted applications this year to the NHMRC for
funding to commence in the following year.

AUSTRALIAN KIDNEY FOUNDATION - MEDICAL RESEARCH SEEDING GRANTS
The Foundation provides funding for seeding grants of up to $15,000 for
research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the
kidneys and urinary tract. An investigator can only apply for one seeding
grant each year, and the application should be for a genuinely new research
idea, which requires initial support in preparation for a full-scale grant.

IAN POTTER FOUNDATION GRANTS
The Foundation supports activities in the following 6 areas:- Education,
Scientific and
Medical Research, Health, Welfare, the Arts, and the Environment and

overseas, to gain further experience overseas or to meet their peers in the

INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS) CALL FOR RESEARCH
PROPOSALS
Educational institutions and suitably qualified individuals are invited to
apply for funding to undertake applied research projects in relation to the
International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Financial support
will be limited to a maximum of $30,000 per selected project.

THE NATIONAL ATAXIA FOUNDATION RESEARCH GRANTS
The Foundation provides limited, short-term financial support of ataxia
research. Grants are awarded for one year and is anticipated that the
average funds granted will be in the US$5,000 to US$15,000 range. Funding
may be considered for up to US$35,000 for projects deserving special
consideration.

CRIMINOLOGY RESEARCH COUNCIL RESEARCH GRANTS
The Council supports methodologically sound research in the areas of
sociology, psychology, law, statistics, police, judiciary, corrections,
mental health, social welfare, education and related fields. Grants are
usually awarded for periods of 12 months from the dates of approval and are
generally paid in instalments

THE NATIONAL ATAXIA FOUNDATION YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD
The Foundation is offering Young Investigators an Award of US$50,000 pa for
2 years. The purpose of this Award is to encourage young clinical and
scientific investigators to pursue a career in the field of ataxia research.

NATIONAL ATAXIA FOUNDATION - RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AWARD
The Foundation promotes and supports research to find the cause, treatment,
and cure for the hereditary and sporadic ataxias. Post-doctoral fellowship
awards are to serve as a bridge from post-doctoral positions to junior
faculty positions. Average funds granted will be in the US$35,000 to
US$45,000 range.
