NEWS
WOMEN, RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION - RESEARCH CONFERENCE
All academics, higher education managers in research, professional
development and equity, policy makers and members of students'
organisations are invited to attend a conference to take place at Curtin
University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia on 25-27 June 2003. The
conference will take a look at research work by women in larger context and
the changing patterns of women's academic work globally.

FORUM FOR EUROPEAN-AUSTRALIAN S&T (FEAST) 4 - NETWORKING FOR EXCELLENCE
On 17 18 June 2003 FEAST is holding a conference to promote scientific
interchange and policy discussion between Australia and Europe at the Shine
Dome in Canberra ACT. The Hon Peter McGauran MP, the Australian Federal
Minister for Science, will open the conference and eminent speakers from
Australia and Europe will be taking part.
The aims of the conference are to increase awareness of the state-of-play
in research in Australia and Europe, facilitate joint research projects,
and provide commentary on the status of Australia-European research
collaboration.
The content of the conference makes it ideal for:
leading public and private researchers engaged, or looking to
encourage, in international cooperation;
public and private sector researchers looking to extend their
networks; and
all researchers and policy makers interested in current issues in
science.
The registration fee is AUD $250 - late registration fee after 23 May is
AUD $270

ALZHEIMERS AUSTRALIA RESEARCH FOUNDATION DEMENTIA RESEARCH GRANTS
Three seeding grants valued of up to $10,000 each will be allocated for
research into:
* Non Clinical and/or Biological; and
* Clinical and/or Psychosocial aspects of dementia.

LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION RESEARCH GRANTS
In 2003, the Foundation is offering Research Grants studying cancer
survivorship and proposals must directly relate to the study discipline.
Applications evaluating pathophysiologic, psychosocial and financial issues
are encouraged. Each Grant may be submitted for 1-3 years of funding with
a yearly budget, including indirect costs, not to exceed $50,000.

ELIZABETH GLASER PEDIATRIC AIDS FOUNDATION SCIENTIST AWARDS
The Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Award is an international program that
provides each investigator with $US650,000 in direct costs for a period of
5 years. Scientists are selected on the basis of their knowledge,
innovation and ability to carry forward Elizabeth Glaser's vision. The
5-year duration of each award is a means of building an invaluable network
of scientists who will continue to impact pediatric HIV/AIDS research long
after the individual grants have been utilised.

ELIZABETH GLASER PEDIATRIC AIDS FOUNDATION RESEARCH GRANTS (ONE-YEAR AND
TWO-YEAR)
The Foundation is funding basic medical research areas which have direct
and immediate relevance to pediatric HIV/AIDS. Applicants are invited to
submit a Letter of Intent for one-year and two-year Research Grants. The
goal of this program is to provide initial funding to investigators to
enable them to gather preliminary data to answer questions quickly and/or
obtain sufficient results to apply to other granting agencies. The
Foundation makes available up to $US80,000 p.a. in direct costs for a
period not to exceed 2 years.

AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Projects will be funded where it can be demonstrated they research specific
areas of interest to the 16 AFL Clubs and/or development issues that affect
the game overall. The objectives of the Program are to provide information
to Clubs and the football community that will improve coaching methodology,
player management, safety, and encourage clubs to adopt a more systematic
approach to sports science and medical research. Each application must be
supported and endorsed by an AFL Club. Funding of up to $130,000 p.a. will
be allocated and continually reviewed for each of the first 3 years of the
program.

QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT, DEPARTMENT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND PLANNING RESEARCH
AND INNOVATION GRANTS
Expressions of interest are sought from organizations that may be eligible
for a subsidy through the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technologies
Scheme, which encourages the introduction of innovative and efficient
sewerage treatment technologies into the State of QLD. AWTT is funding a $7
million scheme aimed to foster cost-effective and environmentally friendly
solutions to sewage treatment. Candidates who appear to have a reasonable
chance of obtaining funding, will be invited to supply a more detailed
proposal for review.

COMMUNITY HEALTH AND TUBERCULOSIS HARRY WINDSOR MEDICAL RESEARCH GRANTS
Each year CHATA provides funds for research into respiratory and lung
diseases such as tuberculosis, COPD, sleep apnoea, chronic cough through
the Harry Windsor Medical Research Grants. Applications are divided into
the following 3 categories: Basic science, Clinical research, and Public
health. Research Grants are awarded to institutions with appropriate
research facilities within NSW, ACT and in the NT. Grants must be used to
support research by a responsible investigator with the approval of the
relevant department.

FELLOWSHIPS & AWARDS
AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE AWARDS AND RESEARCH SUPPORT 2003/2004 OXFORD
NUFFIELD MEDICAL FELLOWSHIPS
Applications are invited for an award under the Scheme for Oxford Nuffield
Medical Fellowships in either a clinical medicine or medical science. The
Fellowship is tenable for 2 years in the first instance, with the
possibility of an extension for a third year. Fellows are expected to
return to Australia at the end of the Fellowship to continue to do work of
a similar nature. The award is available from 1 October 2003 or from
another date as agreed.

PHARMACIA FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA INAUGURAL FELLOWSHIPS
The Foundation was established in 2002 to support the development of the
Australian scientific community and innovative research projects to offer
Fellowships to scientists who can demonstrate research capability, with
significant future potential to attain leadership in their chosen field of
research. These Fellowships will allow the successful applicants to
continue their research career at an Australian university or research
institution, by providing a 5-year Grant. Total budget for 2003 should not
exceed $178,000.

ELIZABETH GLASER PEDIATRIC AIDS FOUNDATION SHORT-TERM AWARDS
The Foundation is interested in funding basic medical research areas, which
have direct and immediate relevance to pediatric HIV/AIDS. Applicants are
invited to submit a Letter of Intent for its Short-Term Awards. The goal
of this program is to provide funding for travel and short-term study at a
U.S. institution, to initiate a critical research project, obtain
preliminary data, learn new techniques in an established laboratory, or
sponsor an important workshop. Award provides up to US$10,000.
