ARC DISCOVERY INDIGENOUS RESEARCHERS DEVELOPMENT (DIRD) PROGRAM - NOW OPEN
FOR RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATIONS
This is to advise that application for these grants are now open
to Indigenous researchers of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait
Islander descent either employed by the University of Sydney as academic
staff or who are enrolled in higher research degrees at the University of
Sydney.
This scheme also provides for one to two year research cadetships (RC-ATSI)
providing salary and research funds to Indigenous researchers of Australian
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Applicants must have been
awarded their PhD since 1 January 2000, or have not yet submitted their PhD
but will do so before 31 December 2003.

If you decide you would like to apply you will need to submit a one page
Intention to Apply to the Research Office by Friday 4 April 2003. Once we
have received your Intention to Apply, the Research Office will contact you
to assist you in putting in a full application.
Full draft applications, 2 hard copies, are due in the Research Office on
Friday 18 April 2003.

Eligibility Exemption Requests for ARC Discovery Indigenous Researchers
Development (DIRD) Program applicants applying for a Research Cadetship (RC
ATSI) - due in the Research Office Monday 24 March 2003
One or two year Research Cadetships with a salary and a research grant
component can be applied for through the ARC DIRD scheme. Eligibility
criteria for applicants are detailed in the ARC DIRD Funding Rules which
can be downloaded from

4.4 page 6 of this document.
In some circumstances, an applicant who is seeking an RC-ATSI may not
satisfy the eligibility criteria due to research career interruption
(including working in universities in non-research positions). If this is
the case, an applicant may apply for an exemption from the eligibility
criteria.
If, after reading the eligibility criteria, a researcher is unsure whether
he/she is eligible to apply for Research Cadetship, he/she must consult
with the The University of Sydney Research Office. If it is decided that
the candidate does require an eligibility exemption, a request must be
lodged in writing, to the Research Office by Friday 24/03/03 . These
letters will be reviewed by the Research Office and then forwarded on to
the ARC to meet their deadline of the 28/03/03.
If an applicant seeking an eligibility exemption fails to meet the ARC
deadline, her/his subsequent application will be deemed ineligible.

ARC LINKAGE-PROJECTS 2003 (ROUND 1)
Instructions for University of Sydney applicants for ARC Linkage-Projects
(Round 1) for funding to commence in January 2004 will be available today

ARC Funding Rules and Instructions are available at

The internal closing date for applications is 17 April 2003. If you require
a GAMS ID please email research at reschols.usyd.edu.au providing your name,
title and date of birth.
Round 2 Applicants Please Note: The ARC Guidelines do not permit an
application for essentially the same project to be submitted in consecutive
rounds. If you wish to apply in Round 1 your project must be substantially
different to that submitted in Round 2.
ARC Linkage-Projects 2003 (Round 1) Eligibility Exemption: Due in the
Research Office by 25 March 2003.
If a University of Sydney applicant for ARC Linkage-Projects 2003 (Round 1)
requires one or more of the following eligibility exemptions:
Potential APDI fellow eligibility- e.g. awarded PhD more than 3 years ago,
career interruption/changes etc
Potential CI or APDI fellow - with financial interests in their potential
industry partner
Waiver of requirements re minimum cash contribution by industry partner
a written request justifying the applicant's special circumstances for an
eligibility exemption must be submitted to the Research Office by the 25

ARC/NHMRC overlap: If you are unsure whether your application is more
appropriately considered by the ARC or the NHMRC, you should forward a
two-page summary outlining your proposal to the Research Office by 25 March
2003. A committee of ARC & NHMRC representatives will consider your
proposal and advise of the decision within about two weeks.

THE GLAXOSMITHKLINE AUSTRALIA AWARD FOR RESEARCH EXCELLENCE
This award, of $30,000, is to recognize distinguished discovery and its
demonstrated or potential use in the field of human health.
Nomination forms and further information are available from The Medical
Director, GlaxoSmithKline Australia, PO Box 168, Boronia, Vic 3155.
Closing date is Thursday 1 May 2003.
This is not administered by the University of Sydney.
AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM EUREKA PRIZES
The Australian Museum has announced the launch of its annual Australian
Museum Eureka Prizes, Australia's premier and most comprehensive national
science awards. The 2003 series consists of 21 prizes worth $210,000.
Candidates can either enter themselves or be nominated by others.
Information and entry forms for all prizes are available at
www.amonline.net.au/eureka. Closing date for nominations is Friday 16 May,
2003.
This is not administered by the University of Sydney.
FREDERICK WATSON FELLOWSHIPS
The National Archives offers Frederick Watson Fellowships annually to
individuals interested in conducting research substantially utilizing its
collection. Successful applicants will have access to the Archives
collection to undertake research, In return, they will actively promote the
Archives and its collection.

GRDC SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES
GRDC has recently reviewed its conference guidelines in relation to support
for international conferences.

Notably no submissions will be accepted out of session i.e. GRDC require
written notification at least two months prior to any bid to host an
international conference, etc.
RESEARCH GRANTS
FOREST AND WOOD PRODUCTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
The FWPRDC invites the submission of Preliminary Research Proposals from
suitably qualified research providers to undertake a detailed investigation
of the gluing and bonding properties of eucalypt timbers. Preference will
be given to PRPs demonstrating strong industry linkages, particularly in
the field of adhesives technology. The proposed project length is 3 years.

RAINE ISLAND CORPORATION RESEARCH SUPPORT SCHEME
The Raine Island Corporation was established to foster and ensure the
conservation and management of the natural and cultural heritage resources
of Raine Island, Moulter and Maclennan Cays and the surrounding seas. Each
year, the Raine Island Corporation invites applications for support from
researchers interested in conducting research on or in relation to Raine
Island. The Corporation offers the following support: Small grants (up to
$10,000); and funded places on an annual field trip to Raine Island (ex
Cairns). Researchers wishing to undertake longer term projects will be
requested to reapply each following year for additional funding.

MEDICAL BENEFITS FUND OF AUSTRALIA LIMITED HEALTH RESEARCH AWARDS
Awards will be made to applications that can demonstrate an improvement in
health outcomes in the treatment of acute and chronic disease, in
particular heart disease. Award will be granted for 1-2 years and will be
in general valued between $15,000 and $50,000 per annum. This scheme is
subject to the University of Sydney Overheads charge.

NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION KATHLEEN CUNINGHAM RESEARCH GRANTS
The National Breast Cancer Foundation is calling for applications for the
Kathleen Cuningham Research Grants to commence in 2004. Grants will be
awarded for projects that advance knowledge into all aspects of breast
cancer. The Foundation is interested particularly in fostering: 1) Research
that increases recognition and management of disease and treatment-related
symptoms; and 2) Research that addresses itself to the translation of
knowledge gained from basic research into improved outcomes for women with
breast cancer.
Applicants should read the guidelines at the web-site of the National
Breast Cancer Foundation carefully. Please note that you should download
the electronic data form from the web and not via email from the
Foundation. Item 5 in the "Instructions for Applicants" is misleading.
Please complete the form and submit it to the Research Office along with
the draft of your entire application by the date indicated below. You will
then be required to email the data form to Mr Chris Robinson, who will
forward it to the Foundation on your behalf.

FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE RESEARCH GRANTS
The Foundation has developed a research grant program to provide financial
support to scholars undertaking research that is directly related to a
better understanding of the factors affecting the quality of life for the
long-term future of humanity. The Foundation invites preliminary grant
applications in the following categories: Future of Humanity Research
Programs & International Collaboration on the Future of Humanity. New
Futures/Special Projects grants are for US$1,000 to $9,000 (seed grants).
Future of Humanity grants are for US$10,000 to $25,000.

PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION OF THE UNITED STATES BASIC RESEARCH PROJECTS
The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation of the United States (PBTFUS)
announces the availability of funding for the support of no more than five
basic laboratory research
projects exhibiting outstanding scientific merit. Preference will be given
to studies that have direct relevance to pediatric brain tumors. Funds
available for each grant are $US50,000 a year for two years not to exceed a
total of $US100,000. Funds may be used for start up projects or as
supplementary funding.

FELLOWSHIPS AND AWARDS
NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA - HAROLD WHITE FELLOWSHIPS
Each year from four to seven Fellowships are awarded to enable established
scholars and writers to undertake research in the Library for periods from
three to six months. Fellows are provided with a return economy airfare to
Canberra and a grant-in-aid towards the Fellow's living expenses in
Canberra. Fellows appointed in 2003 were given grants of up to $700 a week.
Honorary Fellowships are also awarded to scholars and writers who, being in
receipt of full salaries or funds from other sources, do not require
financial assistance but who would benefit from the other privileges of
Fellowships.

PHARMACIA FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA - SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN BIOMEDICAL
SCIENCE IN AUSTRALIA
The Pharmacia Foundation Australia has been established to support the
development of the Australian scientific community and innovative research
projects. A major
initiative of the Foundation is the awarding of Pharmacia Foundation
Australia Fellowships, with funding for a five-year period. In 2004 the
grant will offer a maximum of $178,000.

CONFERENCE AND TRAVEL
SARDI A W HOWARD MEMORIAL TRUST TRAVEL GRANTS
The AW Howard Memorial Trust Inc annually awards travel grants of up to $3
500 to scientists to undertake overseas study tours or participate in
international conferences
related to aspects of pasture research within the aims of the Trust.
Candidates must be a member of staff of a recognised public research
organisation and have been
resident in Australia over the past three years. The Awards represent a
career development opportunity. Preference will be given to scientists who
