I am really excited about this!

The full $100,000 is not just for salary. CRC Chairs are usually split
2/3 salary, 1/3 research funding. It means that the starting salary
would not be much higher than normal (though institutions can, and often
do, top up that salary). The good side is that there is a special
number of CRC Chairs designated for small institutions (more than they
should get proportionally to overall research funding) so there is a
really good chance that they will actually get the money. On top of
that Malaspina is in Nanaimo (I can think of a lot worse places to live
in Canada) and is a CASTL school (which means they are one of only a few
Canadian institutions formally affiliated with the Carnegie Academy for
the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning). You definitely do not have
to be a Canadian to get a CRC. In fact the Federal Government prides
itself on the 'brain gain' aspect of the program. Anyone on the CAD
collective willing to apply?

Brad

Hm. I think this is a first in Canada. It may not get the funding in the
end but I've not seen the topic before in the CRC programme, and it
comes with a tidy sum annually for five years. I think around $100 000
Canadian. That's a LOTta dough. Starting profs usually make half to
two-thirds of that.

I know at least one Brit who came over for one in the sciences at
Guelph, so it's conceivable that people from other countries could
apply.

Canada Research Chair
in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Malaspina University-College invites applications from emerging
researchers who wish to be considered for nomination for a Tier II
Canada Research Chair, focusing on the concept of engaging learning. The

Research Chair would mentor faculty who are examining their own teaching

practice in relation to effectiveness of student learning, create
cross-community networks to explore common ideas and questions of
effective learning, identify key problems and issues in higher
education, and establish a research plan to advance the scholarly study
of student learning as the foundational activity of Malaspina
University-College.

Responsibilities will include four distinct yet overlapping categories.
First, the Chair will continue to engage in disciplinary and more
broadly-defined higher education scholarship of teaching and learning,
while continuing some disciplinary teaching. Second, the Chair will
encourage and facilitate the work of Malaspina faculty, administration,
and students as they engage in, understand, and develop their own
scholarship of teaching and learning inquiry projects; this might
include facilitating the design and critique of collaborative inquiries
into teaching and learning, or the trans-disciplinary development and
implementation of diverse methodological options across campus and
beyond. The third role of the Malaspina Research Chair will be as an
educational catalyst, working to promote, share, and make public
emerging scholarly work designed to enhance and improve teaching and
learning. Fourth, the Chair will coordinate dissemination of scholarly
work through provincial, national and international organizations that
foster the scholarship of teaching and learning.

The impact of this Canada Research Chair would be significant at many
levels- as a rallying point for scholarly investigations of teaching and

learning at Malaspina University-College, a connection point for local
institutions, a dissemination point for broader national change, and as
a visible commitment to students and student learning in higher
education.

About Malaspina University-College

Malaspina University-College is a public, comprehensive, four-year
institution serving students in the region of central Vancouver Island
and coastal British Columbia. Our main campus is located on the slopes
of Mount Benson, overlooking the beautiful harbour city of Nanaimo;
regional campuses are located in Duncan and Powell River, and there is a

centre in Parksville.

The unique university college concept was established in British
Columbia in 1989 by the provincial government and combines the best of
the Canadian university and college traditions. Our mandate is provided
by the B.C. College and Institute Act and related legislation. As
specified in the Act, our governance structure is composed of a Board of

Governors and an Education Council with shared responsibilities.

Malaspina proudly offers a wide range of high-quality academic, applied,

career/technical, vocational, and developmental programs leading to
degrees, diplomas and certificates. Teaching excellence and student
success are stressed in all programs, and faculty engage in a diversity
of scholarly activities. Classes are small, allowing individual and
direct communication among faculty, staff and students. In 2004-05,
over 13,500 individual students (5,941 full-time equivalent) enrolled
in credit programs; 10% of the student population is of aboriginal
ancestry. In addition, 7,600 individuals are taking part in Continuing
Education courses, and over 1,500 in contract training programs.

Malaspina University-College is known for its strong entrepreneurial
spirit and has been a leader in International Education and contract
training for business and industry since the early 1980s. More than
1,300 international students enrolled at Malaspina during the 2004-05
year. We have established formal ties with institutions in Canada, as
well as with sister colleges, universities, governments, trade and
industry in Australia, China, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy,
Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand,
and the United States of America.

Capital improvements and future capital plans reflect the escalating
growth of our program offerings and our student population, as well as
the rapid growth of the mid Vancouver Island region and Nanaimo, in
particular.

As one of the largest public employers in the City of Nanaimo, Malaspina

University-College offers employees the opportunity to enjoy a
stimulating and diverse workplace, with the added assurance of excellent

benefit packages.
