From matthew.todd at sydney.edu.au Thu Jul 5 21:14:25 2012 From: matthew.todd at sydney.edu.au (Matthew Todd) Date: Thu Jul 5 21:14:45 2012 Subject: [CHAST] CHAST Lecture - Dr Brian Schmidt on The Accelerating Universe - July 18th 1pm Message-ID: Dear Friends of CHAST, An alert to a talk later this month by Dr Brian Schmidt, Nobel Laureate for Physics in 2011. Brian is obviously in high demand at the moment, so this is an excellent opportunity to hear him speak. *Please note the unusual start time of 1 pm*. Cheers, Mat CHAST Lecturer : Dr. Brian Schmidt Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Australian National University * The Accelerating Universe* When: Wednesday 18th July 2012, 1 pm Where: Eastern Ave Auditorium, The University of Sydney Cost: Admission Free. No Bookings. All Welcome. In 1998 two teams traced back the expansion of the universe over billions of years and discovered that it was accelerating, a startling discovery that suggests that more than 70% of the cosmos is contained in a previously unknown form of matter, called Dark Energy. The 2011 Nobel Laureate for Physics, Brian Schmidt, leader of the High-Redshift Supernova Search Team, will describe this discovery and explain how astronomers have used observations to trace our universe's history back more than 13 billion years, leading them to ponder the ultimate fate of the cosmos. http://sydney.edu.au/chast/ -- MATTHEW TODD | Senior Lecturer and Honours Coordinator School of Chemistry | Faculty of Science THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY Rm 519, F11 | The University of Sydney | NSW | 2006 T +61 2 9351 2180 | F +61 2 9351 3329 | M +61 415 274104 E matthew.todd@sydney.edu.au | W http://sydney.edu.au/science/chemistry/research/todd.html CRICOS 00026A This email plus any attachments to it are confidential.
